Today we’d like to introduce you to Pete Cervantes.
Hi Pete, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I was born and raised in Long Beach California. As a kid I was always very artistic, I remember watching my mom get ready, putting on her makeup, and doing her hair. I was always taken by her observation to detail. I never wanted to be her, but I always wanted to be the one to get her ready! lol as soon as I was old enough, she would allow me to help with her hair, which always made me really happy. It was also the way we bonded. Growing up in a single-parent home was never easy but my bestfriend/mom always made sure she allowed me to do what I loved. When I was 18yrs old I started working for MAC Cosmetics, that was a dream come true. Never having any experience, I was raised to fake it till you make it. There is where I learned the art of makeup and what it can actually do. Not only was I doing what I loved I was able to make people feel beautiful and that was more than I could ask for (Complete bonus). After a few years, I ventured off from MAC and was able to professionally grow taking with me everything I had learned. I was able to get Certified and later on in my career become a Licensed Cosmetologist. I have worked for many brands including Cover FX, Smashbox, Urban Decay, Estee Lauder, Lancome, Trish McEvoy, and many more. I have also ventured into skincare working for brands such as Murad, Philosophy, and Clinique. For the last 5yrs, I have been doing hair working for a few salons in California. I moved to Salt Lake City late 2019. Currently, I am in the process of expanding my freelance Company P.S Illustrations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never a smooth road when you’re an artist. There have been many setbacks and bumps in the road. I don’t regret the path that I have taken, it has helped me grown in more ways than one. I have been able to become a stronger person who knows their worth. I have been able to create my own freelance company P.S Illustrations with my partner Stephen Hallburn (Photographer/ Creative) which has taken me to places I never imagined. As a freelance artist, I have been able to work with theaters making wigs and creating makeup looks. I have also been able to work with independent artists creating looks for their music videos. When you are you pursue your passion there are no bad days only lessons to learn and grow from. “If you follow your passion, you’ll never work a day in your life”-Tony Bennett
