Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Taylor.
Hi Rick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I would like to share my personal story of how Taylor Maid brought Beauty to Utah. In 1961, as a 15-year-old boy, I got my first job, sweeping floors at Frend’s Beauty Supply in Studio City, California. Learning the ropes of the beauty and theatrical business I became the manager at age 17.
Our business quickly grew into one of the premier Beauty Supplies in the country and we supplied many of Hollywood’s biggest stars and studios. In 1975, I returned to my roots in Utah and saw the lack of beauty options available. To fill this void, I decided to open Taylor Maid Beauty Supply and Theatrical in the University Mall in Orem. In those early years, I would drive straight through to California and back every weekend to bring the top beauty products in the country to my customers in Utah.
Our loyal customers who saw and appreciated what we had to offer, grew us into the largest Beauty Supply in Utah with over 20 stores and the first beauty supply to be in a mall. Today, 46 years later, my vision is still the same. Taylor Maid’s commitment is to have the best brands and the ability to cater to the needs of each individual customer at the most competitive price possible.
Taylor Maid is still family-owned with my sons and daughters playing an integral part in our future.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been smooth sailing. There were many times while in my starting years that I worked 18 hour days, drove from Utah to California in a day to pick up products and merchandise.
Having built this business on my own and then able to bring it to what it is today. There will always be hard times when owning a business but also great reward
We’ve been impressed with Taylor Maid Beauty Supply, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a very unique business. Having a huge variety of products. We specialize in beauty, special effects makeup, and costumes. What’s sets us apart is we try to carry items you can’t find in other places as well as carry a variety of your favorites to make us a one stop shop.
We have been supplying universities, schools, and film for the past 46 years. And pride ourselves in finding what you need.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Family. I have always treasured the fact that my children have been able to work in this business with me.
