Today we’d like to introduce you to Kellie Webb.
Hi Kellie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved to grow things. When I was 8 years old, my dad let me have full design rights to a 4′ x 4′ space in his flower garden. He took me to a nursery, and apparently, I spent $80 to fill that plot. My dad didn’t blink an eye, and he said it was the most beautiful place in our yard that year.
Fast forward 25 years later when my husband and I purchased 2.5 acres back in our hometown of North Ogden. We had 2 boys under 2 years old, and property with more weeds and overgrown trees than we knew what to do with. But slowly, much like that 4″ x 4″ space in my dad’s yard, I began to tame ours. I continued to grow more and more flowers each year, sharing more and more with neighbors, and eventually selling a few to those in our community.
In 2021, we made over 150 floral bouquets and hosted over 85 people for floral and evergreen wreath workshops. We grew thousands of flowers and loved every minute we could spend out in them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing things is never a smooth road. There is never a 100% success rate, though I do wish there were. Some flowers thrive, and others fail. There are corners of our yard that are still so scary, with hard barren soil and no water sources. Not to mention trying to control weeds and toddlers.
I also struggle to know how much to sell and market, and when to simply grow flowers because I truly love them. It is difficult to know where to let my passion end and a business begin. But still, I grow.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about North Ogden Flower Farm?
We grow flowers that you will never find in stores. Most flowers that you see for sale are grown in South America and ship well. But there are thousands of gorgeous flowers, like dahlias for instance, that will make your heart stop, but that you’ll never see in Costco or Smith’s. That is where we come in.
We grow the rare, the beautiful, the simple, the native, and the challenging. They are grown organically, they are cut fresh, and they are truly grown with small-town love. We are proud of our flowers because we truly love them. And I believe that shows in every blossom. We have chosen not to do weddings or farmer’s markets, because our time together as a young family is valuable.
Saturdays are sometimes the only days we have for family adventures. But we do offer something very different: On-site farm experiences. We invite people to come and pick and arrange their own flowers or come into our barn to make their own Christmas wreaths. We want to share what we have.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Find what you’re good at, accept help for the things at which you’re not. Be kind to yourself in all that you do, and believe that you’ll find your niche. Success doesn’t always come in dollars. I believe success is getting to the end of your experiences and your life and being proud of all that you did and how you treated those you met.
