Today we’d like to introduce you to Mermaid Iris.
Hello Mermaid Iris, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been drawn to mermaids – they’re mysterious, magical, and beautiful. At all the events and festivals where I saw the Mermaids of the Great Salt Lake, I would always take a picture with them. My friend encouraged me to join their mermaid pod. After months of following them on social media, they announced they were looking for new mermaids, so I set up an interview right away.
After the interview, I immediately started shopping for a tail. Once I found my perfect ‘Island Iris’ tail and put it on, I instantly felt like I was at home. After a few events with my pod and a couple of photoshoots, I decided being a mermaid is something that brings me so much happiness that I wanted to branch out and become a mermaid model who can be hired individually to make any party, event, festival, parade, etc. more magical!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There are a million mermaids out there nowadays, so standing out and being noticed can be a struggle. Also starting out during a pandemic, it has been hard to find events to participate in.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At a time in my life where I felt like I was drowning, being a mermaid brought me back to the shore and reminded me just how magical life can be. I am all about being the change you wish to see in the world.
Mermaid Iris has a green thumb and loves flowers, succulents, and gardening. She loves to be out in nature, read, sew, sunbathe, and sing/dance to the beat of her own drum. Mermaid Iris is the flowerchild underwater who’s passionate about keeping our oceans clean, the earth green, and living out your most magical dreams.
How do you think about luck?
I find myself lucky to be able to live out my fantesea of being a mermaid. I find myself lucky to be able to see the light and magic spark in children’s eyes as they look at me or ask me questions about being a mermaid. I used to take photos with the Mermaids of the Great Salt Lake at Pride festivals, now I’m lucky enough to be a mermaid people are taking pictures with at Pride festivals.
Even when I feel I am having a series of bad luck, changing my mindset helps me remember that there is always good in bad situations just as it is always bad in good situations.
