Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Essig.
Hi Megan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been in the beauty industry since the age of 16. I was dual-enrolled in high school & aesthetician school. I have known since 10 years old that this is the industry I wanted to be in. The transformation and what it can do to humans to uplift their spirit is my why. In high school, I did not want anything to do with hair it was all about doing makeup and watching the transformation through makeup.
It wasn’t till I graduated high school and my parents said, “ you must get an education so you can support yourself”. I enrolled in Paul Mitchell the school in 2009 & have been doing hair ever since. The start of my career was not easy. For anyone new to the industry, I highly recommend getting an amazing mentor & getting really great at your craft !!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My first few years were the bumpiest. I got out of hair school and knew nothing about doing hair. I felt like my school pumped me up so much to believe that I knew it all by the time I graduated. As I started working in the industry I discovered it was the complete opposite.
I got let go from several places while trying to establish my career in LA as a brand new stylist. I moved back to Florida and gave up hair altogether for a year. After my year hiatus, I met a mentor that really helped me build my skills and confidence.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a hairstylist & I specialize in balayage transformations. It brings me so much joy to be able to transform someone’s look to enhance how they feel about themselves. When clients come to me it’s all about connection -first I get down to what they want to be done to their hair and why they want it done as I get to know them during each visit.
What does success mean to you?
Having connected and impacted client’s life’s for the better.
