Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Pixton.
Hi Sara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Sara Pixton, and I’m a birth and postpartum doula serving Utah County. This work called to me after I had my son–an unmedicated VBAC that awakened me to my innate power and changed my life!
Five years later, I’m still in love with this work. I love educating and empowering families as they prepare to bring new life into this world. I love watching my clients discover new strength as they labor, birth, and care for their babies. It never gets old.
In fact, I love this work so much that I’m preparing to be a certified nurse midwife! There’s a decent bit of school between my current reality and reaching that goal, but fortunately I’m a super nerd and really love school.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I decided to be a birth doula, I didn’t realize that I would also become a small business owner! I came into the work because I love supporting pregnant and laboring women, not because I have business savvy!
It took me some time to become comfortable posting on social media in an authentic way, building my websites, asking clients for reviews, doing my taxes, building up my clientele, and all the details that come with owning your own business. But I’ve learned so much along the way and gained confidence not only as a doula, but also as an entrepreneur!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a birth doula: I provide physical, emotional, and educational support for families during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. I love connecting with people as they prepare to bring new life into the world! I love being by their side as they find their own strength in the act of giving birth. It’s such a powerful act!
I specialize in supporting first time parents and VBAC parents. I’m also able to serve families with financial constraints who may not otherwise be able to afford a doula because of the grant program I offer.
I also have a unique academic background that I’ve connected with my doula work. I have a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics and am fascinated by the power of words: they impact our perception of ourselves, our experiences, and our realities! They also shape those things as well. I’ve drawn attention to the power of words during the birthing year through my podcast, Birth Words, and multiple trainings that I’ve offered to other birth professionals.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Midwife Ina May Gaskin wrote, “Birth is something that women do–not something that happens to them. The birth-giving woman is the central agent in the ancient drama of life bringing forth new life.” I love supporting my clients as they step into their power as life-giving agents!
