Today we’d like to introduce you to Drake Kunz.
Hi Drake, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
After 14 years of bartending, I went through some big life changes.
I couldn’t work one more day behind the bar. Flowers have always been in my blood (my great-grandma was a florist) but it wasn’t until 2010 that I started doing flowers for a full-time living. They kind of found me in a time when I just didn’t know what to do… I fell in love and never looked back.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have moved and had to start over a few times.
All the while fighting a lot of personal battles which eventually lead to some serious health problems.
Once I finally fixed those problems my focus and my career became clear and solid and moved full speed ahead.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My style and understanding of art put me in a different category. My great-grandma was a florist, her daughter, my grandma is a very accomplished artist. I grew up in a world of color and creativity. A lot of people know me for my personality but will also say that my work speaks volumes and can very much stand on its own.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
While I have been lucky enough to work alongside some great people and have opportunities to present themselves at unexpected times, I have put in the work. A lot of work. I’ve studied and worked and studied more.
After 10 years professionally in the floral Industry, I put myself through floral design school to have some real grit and professional weight behind my skills. I recently just graduated and will go to Las Vegas in July for the next big part of my continuing floral education.
