Community Highlights: Meet Ahmad Kareh of Twistlab Marketing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ahmad Kareh. Them and their team share their story with us below:

My interest in human behavior began at a very young age. My interests and involvement in sports and other extracurricular activities put me in touch with people from many walks of life. These experiences enabled me to see the world from many different perspectives and through the eyes of many different cultures.

I grew up in Amman, Jordan. In 1993, before he knew anything about Salt Lake City, I volunteered as a summer intern at a computer store; I learned the ins and out of both software and hardware. I also learned Logo and Basic for Mac and continued to learn design software and technologies as they become available.

In the summer of 1994, when I was 12, I, along with a few childhood friends, made a deal with a video rental store owner. If we cleaned out the storage room, they could fill the space with their new business, a computer repair store. After getting set up, they marketed our computer store to nearby companies and started fixing computers for a flat fee.

I built my first website in 1996, which my school presented in California to represent the achievements of its student body. That same year, I started finding my skills in basketball. I played for my high school team. Soon after, I played for the team representing the city of Amman, and, together, we won the national championship.

Al Riyadi (formerly known as Al Jazeera) invited me to join their professional team and then I joined the junior National Jordanian team. These competitive environments taught him the importance of teamwork as well as leadership.

In 1999, Ahmad moved to Utah to study management information systems at Brigham Young University and worked for the Center for Instructional Design developing BYU’s Online and Independent Study Courses. With the help and mentorship of a Communications and Advertising professor, I soon realized my true passion lay in marketing while working on a project for Dell Computers, specifically understanding the psychology of consumer behavior.

In 2000, I changed my major, and BYU admitted me into the Advertising and Marketing program. I continued my work as a developer and project manager. I then oversaw the building of courses while also adding graphic design, video, and programming to my responsibilities. I later received my MBA from Utah State University, a Web and Print Design certificate from the University of Utah, and a certificate in Adult Education at UC Berkeley. and later completed a Masters in Management at Harvard University.

I am involved with the day-to-day operations of Twistlab Marketing. I teach courses at Salt Lake Community College, Brigham Young University, Utah State University, and Westminster. I’m a member of the Forbes Agency Council and serve on the board of the Emerald Project.

I love teaching. I am passionate about helping the next generation create an impact on our community. I also. love communications, marketing, and advertising. I share my experience by assisting local businesses with strong values to compete on an equal footing with larger corporations who may have lost their values along the. way.

I pride myself on being a good friend, son, brother, and uncle. I derive strength and guidance from my values as a Muslim and do my best to help combat the misrepresentation of our religion in the media by setting an example through my actions.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Discrimination is, unfortunately, alive in Utah. I do believe that the majority of our community is open to diversity, but it only takes one decision-maker to make life difficult for someone.

I have experienced racism and discrimination on several occasions while in Utah. I’m sad to report that much of this came from organizations that pride themselves on inclusivity and diversity.

I am doing my best to communicate these challenges to 1- help the young Muslims in Utah own and trust in themselves and their identity. 2- To seek help from the community and ask them to speak up against injustice when possible.
