Today we’d like to introduce you to Del Yarisantos.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I go by Del – I’am first-generation immigrant to the US from the Philippines when I was 6. My dad was in the navy and my parents were separated for about 4-5 years while my mom went to nursing school in the Philippines. As a Navy family, we moved every couple of years throughout my childhood, and my family moved to UT when I was 16.
I received my bachelor’s degree at the U in International Studies with an an emphasis in Terrorism. While I was in college, I served in the Utah National Guard (MI 142nd) for a couple of years. After graduation, a divorce, and birthing her first child, she was able to find work in food/supplement manufacturing doing Business to Business Sales. After gathering a lot of knowledge in food/supplement manufacturing – I was able to find parallels in manufacturing with tech lingo (Lean and Agile), so I was able to land a job with a tech start-up.
Unfortunately, I was laid off during the pandemic while working on her master’s degree. I still felt like something was missing and found Tech-Moms through a little bit of research. I loved how Tech-Mom’s program created a safe place to explore what women can be and do in tech. Since Tech Moms, I’ve created and deployed websites, landed a scholarship with Vschool(coding bootcamp), created a couple of Hackathon Teams, even won a couple of Hackathons which lead to creating Dev-Moms.
A place where Tech-Mom graduates or coding bootcamp women can use their newfound skills and turn it into a website contracting service for small businesses who need a cost-effective website solution. We launched our service program in late December and so far we’ve landed several website projects, partnerships, and executive sponsors! Honestly, I couldn’t have done this without my business partner Ally who I met at Tech-Moms, support of Tech-Mom Co-Founders to house us, and the amazing women of Tech in Utah.
I’am where I am at because of all the badass tech ladies who have trail-blazed a path of building women up and empowering them with tech skills. Now, I get the opportunity to give back and empower the next women in tech or business!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh, it has not been a smooth road, lots of rejections turned into beautiful experiences and redirection that led me to create Dev-Moms!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Dev-Moms is a program under the umbrella of the Non-Profit Tech-Moms for the purpose of accelerating the job experience for Tech Mom graduates who want to use their skills after graduation in Web Development, Project Management, or UI/UX through website contract work with small businesses.
Our vision and mission is to create a place for women where they can collaborate, problem solve, be in teams and deliver simple tech solutions for small business owners who need a cost-effective solution. All to inspire, empower women & business owners with the tools to succeed in tech.
We offer small businesses:
-Web Design
-Web Development
-Website Consultation
-SEO
-Web Maintenance
Small business owners love to work with us because we create a plan that is done within scope, within the budget, and on time that works with their needs. And we spare the tech jargon on them and use language that helps them understand how the tools we are using are bringing value to their business.
As our core values at Dev-Moms are problem-solving, teamwork, and collaboration. For those who want to partner/donate/sponsor Dev-Moms – all proceeds go to our operations and provide business grants to the IRC’s Small Business/Entrepreneur program.
Our business does more than empower the next women in tech – it gives back to the marginalized small business communities. It’s a total win-win!
We’d love to hear what you think about risk-taking?
I’m kinda a risk-taker as I do believe the bigger the risk the bigger the reward but as a single mother, there is only so much risk I can take without impacting the home.
So I always have to have a backup plan and know all options/solutions before I take a risk.
For example, this year, I wanted more time at home, focus on Dev-Moms, school, and with my kids, and less stress on money – so I sold my townhome so I didn’t have to worry about money for a while.
So if anything, I am more risk aware than risk averse.
