Today we’d like to introduce you to Coco Freeo. Them and their team share their story with us below:
Coco Freeo moved to Idaho in 2016 from the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. Since her debut at The Virgin Show in 2019, she has performed in local theater for Alley Rep Theater, as well as competed in Boise Next Drag Superstar season 4.
Since the competition, she has had the opportunity to create several virtual drag performances for local audiences as well as throughout the country! In addition, she filmed over 10 episodes of “Drag Queen Story Time”.
Most recently, Coco is part of the ensemble cast of a weekly show called Tropicana Nights! Echa Pa’lante! During the pandemic, Coco created opportunities with other artists in the country to film digital drag performances to stay engaged with the audience in such difficult times.
This opportunity created relationships with other performers in different states, Coco has been performing in the state of Utah most recently with JRC events. Coco has been bringing the Caribbean flavor to the state of Utah, showing the spicy vibes from the sunny island of Puerto Rico.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Like everything, there are always challenges in everything we do. In my case one of the main challenges was the language barrier, English is my second language, and moving to the states and learning a whole new language, culture, and lifestyle was a whole adventure.
I struggled to learn pop songs in English to try to “fit” with what I was exposed to around me and pleased the audience. Until, most recently that I have embraced who I am, and where I am from.
The response from the audience and peers has been amazing and made me realize how important is to show who we are, the audience wants to get to know us, who we are, and where are we from. Now, I am proud of showcasing the Puerto Rican queen that I am, my culture, my language, and all the beautiful things I grew up with.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an educator, I worked as a teacher for 12 years.
I have a strong passion for children and young learners, they are our future. I completed my master’s degree in special and early childhood education in the states in 2020.
I have been involved in Drag Queen storytime on multiple occasions, creating safe spaces for children and families and awareness of LGBTQ+ stories.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
It’s so important to support local artists, we work very hard to bring you a whole experience.
