Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Hales.
Hi Tyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I started dental school at the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry at the University of Southern California, we immediately got out our dental tools and began working on the basic skills of dentistry.
The academic aspect of dental school was fine, but the real excitement came every time I held those tools in my hands. I loved getting to work with my hands. I felt like an artist as I etched and carved into teeth.
I was engrossed with esthetic principles and used every opportunity to apply the concepts in my limited practice as a student.
I just couldn’t wait to graduate from dental school where I could fully immerse myself in cosmetic dentistry and start changing people’s lives by creating confident smiles. Right out of dental school, I worked as an associate in a fast-paced, high-volume Medicaid office in Colorado. I learned a lot very quickly but felt like I was limiting myself. I knew I had more to give to my patients so I saw this as a sign to pivot.
I moved my family back to my hometown of Orange County, CA where I joined Dr. Lincoln Parker to create Hales Parker Dentistry. Owning my own business meant that I finally had the freedom to take my skills to the next level and build my reputation as a top cosmetic dentist. My passion is helping my patients look and feel their best so that their outward appearance is a reflection of how amazing they feel inside.
I am lucky I get to do what I love every day.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I was really starting to hit my stride in my new business and freshly expanded practice when, you guessed it, COVID hit. Being a business owner is stressful enough, but add in a mandated office closure and that was almost enough to push me over the edge.
I know many people can relate to this struggle. I am grateful for all that we learned through this experience that helped us grow as business owners and Dentists. It can be hard to find a partner and staff that matches your vision and your drive.
I have built a great team that supports me, allows me to be myself, and encourages me to become even better than I am today.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a cosmetic dentist and specialize in smile makeovers and veneers. My process is unique because I offer the “smile test drive”. Patients interested in veneers get an opportunity to see what veneers would look like before making any sort of commitment. I place a removable material on their teeth to show them what is possible with veneers in improving shape, color, and symmetry.
The “test drive” reveal is almost as impressive as the real thing and my patients love seeing their smiles in real-time. Patients are also able to communicate with me and get their questions answered using “Smile Virtual”. They submit a few photos, tell me what they would like to change about their smile, and ask any other questions they might have.
I send them a personalized video addressing their questions and concerns. It really breaks down the communication barriers and allows my patients to get their questions answered without even leaving their houses. Plus, when patients who have communicated with me via Smile Virtual come to the office, there are no surprises and expectations are clear.
I am known as a celebrity dentist after working with several Bravo TV stars, models, actors, Influencers, and public figures. I enjoy building relationships with my patients and throughout the veneer process, we become more than a business transaction. Making these connections and friendships is my favorite part of what I do.
Cosmetic dentistry takes expertise, artistry, an eye for detail, and ultimately, a skilled team. I work with amazing ceramics who create a beautiful products. I communicate extensively with them to translate my patient’s vision so their veneers are exactly what they are envisioning.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Mental health is so important and is something I have put a focus on recently.
I love listening to motivational podcasts. I usually tune in while I am at the gym in the mornings and have found that they impact my attitude towards the day.
I also do daily meditation, and religious studies and I meet with a life coach regularly which all help me be at my best as a dentist but also as a husband and a father.
