Rising Stars: Meet James Jensen

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Jensen. Them and their team share their story with us below:

James Jensen is an entrepreneur committed to solving problems related to how people interact and engage with each other daily. He was one of those kids who would take everything apart to see how they work, and now he creates experiences that utilize VR to transport people to another place. Jensen is always at the forefront of technology.

For more than two decades, he has worked in illustration, design, and interactive media for companies and clients including Sony Entertainment, Disney, FOX, Dreamworks SK, MTV, and his own creative CG animation company, Sandman Studios.

Jensen previously created and co-founded The VOID, a critically acclaimed immersive entertainment company.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the largest obstacles when we first started was this black box of the unknown: Whether we could actually catch a person and make them believe they’re still falling—especially a professional BASE jumper.

The answer is yes, we can and have done it. After that, the next challenge was automating the process which we’ve also been able to successfully do.

Now the only obstacle is getting locations open. Due to COVID and the environment we’re in, delays in manufacturing and shipping affected us the most.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
This is an evolution.

I started as an illustrator, focusing on oil paints, traditional artwork, and airbrushing. I went to school for commercial art and design where I was exposed to computers and digital artwork. I fell in love with the undo button, Adobe Illustrator, and a bunch of other design tools.

I took those skills and started my own creative agency. While there, I started to work more with visual effects which got me into 3D programs (again, the undo button was amazing). After a while, I moved on from creating the art to actually building the concepts and ideas. With the agency I owned, we were always making everyone else look like multi-million dollar companies, and I was like, “We could do that to ourselves.”

I still use all of my illustration and design skills to visualize and show people my ideas. I try to incorporate it into my work where I can. In fact, I did an oil painting this weekend for something that’ll hang in our new Bluffdale location.

I also love solving problems, so my skills have developed and evolved to fit. I’ve moved now to a vision and product that can create life-changing moments for people. That’s something I’m the proudest of.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Relationships are the most important thing.

It doesn’t matter how much money you make or don’t make; what matters is how you treat the people around you. On top of that, the trust that you have with them is also a critical piece. You can build some amazing things with people who trust you and believe and share your same vision.

My entrepreneurial drive isn’t about making millions of dollars. I live for creating a way for people to experience life-changing moments.

For me, relationships and life-changing moments are way better drivers than money. If you focus on those things, the money thing will work itself out—it’s a nice by-product. If you do something that you love—and the people around you love it too—that naturally creates money.
