Meet David Lyon

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Lyon.

David, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started playing music at a pretty young age. My parents enrolled me in piano lessons when I was eight and like most eight-year-olds, I hated it. When I was 10, my parents bought me my first drum set and that’s really what started my music journey. Drums were my life! I played for hours a day, drumming along to other people’s songs and jamming with friends and “band members”.

After four years of playing drums, I became tired of jamming along to other people’s songs and wanted to create my own riffs and songs, I hated waiting on other people to create songs because I was always impatient and they never created songs fast enough. So I picked up a guitar, learned a few songs (just to get familiar with playing), and started writing right away.

After that, I started a few bands, started recording myself, and started coming up with my own “sound”, which is symphonic metal.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing was ever smooth sailing. I had tons of failed attempts with many bands. From being in a My Chemical Romance knock-off band to pop-punk, and then metal. Each band ended up with me always kicking everybody out. Which lead me to be a solo artist and where I am at today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a freelance musician and I specialize in guitar and composition. I’ve recorded and worked with Grammy award nominees and many great composers.

Aside from freelance work, I am a solo artist that plays an 8-string guitar and writes symphonic trailer metal. The work I’m most proud of is the songs I have yet to write.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
