Today we’d like to introduce you to Ginger Bailey.
Hi Ginger, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and Diabetes Educator for over fifteen years, I have helped countless people feel better and live better by eating better. As a Magna Cum Laude graduate from Utah State University, I began my career as a Clinical Dietitian at LDS Hospital. Before long, I developed a specialty with diabetes and cancer patients.
My passion for nutrition, and desire to help even more people led me to start Salt Lake NutriCoaching, LLC. As a diet and wellness coach, my greatest strength is my ability to analyze each client’s situation, goals, and special needs to determine the ideal nutrition plan for them.
My experiences at LDS Hospital have also given me the ability to empathize and communicate with each client on a truly personal level. My clients find they have a coach that truly cares about their long-term wellbeing, and understands the personal challenges and obstacles facing them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Becoming a dietitian was a very challenging process. I worked very hard to get accepted into the coordinated dietetics program that only accepted a few students per year.
A week into the first semester I fell very ill. The doctors had no idea what was wrong with me. I spent the entire semester in tremendous pain, barely able to function. I was determined to make it through school, so I kept working, and somehow managed to learn what was necessary. I slowly recovered my health and was able to graduate with honors, despite the tremendous challenges I faced in the process.
I spent the first years of my career working at LDS Hospital in the cancer unit. I had many family members that battled cancer, and it made me feel fulfilled to know that I was helping others. It was a difficult job as there were many patients that didn’t make it, but I felt like I was making a difference for those that did.
While working there, I obtained my board certification in nutrition support, which was a very challenging and high-level certification. Then, in 2012 my father passed away suddenly from pancreatic cancer. After that, the job became too emotionally taxing and I knew I needed to change what I was doing. I searched for many jobs, but I couldn’t find one that would allow me to balance my career and my family in a way that was satisfactory to me.
Even in school I really wanted to start a private practice but I didn’t have the nerves or the necessary experience to do it fresh out of school. At this point, I decided it was time to pursue my dream to start my own business and build a practice that I could be proud of. Leaving a job with steady pay, to build something from scratch took tremendous courage.
I wasn’t entirely sure I would be successful, but it was a dream I felt compelled to pursue as if it was my calling in life. There were weeks that were very discouraging, especially the first year. Even now there are weeks that present tremendous challenges, as I am constantly faced with new problems inherent in running a business, and due to instability as a result of the current public health crisis.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Salt Lake NutriCoaching, LLC?
As registered dietitian nutritionists, we help people live a better life through better nutrition. We help guide people in making the lifestyle changes that are necessary in order to function at an optimal level.
I have a diverse background with many medical issues, as I have experienced many of them myself, but also found ways of healing them. I believe in meeting people where they are at, and then empowering them with the tools necessary to take care of themselves and improve their own health and their lives. Our goal is to help people help themselves, in the simplest way possible.
I have learned the importance and value of sports and other physical activities. Staying active is a critical element of our physical health, and proper nutrition is the foundation for an active lifestyle.
Because of that, we also offer individualized nutrition counseling for improving sports and athletic performance. We have an FDA-approved metabolic analyzer in the office that can more specifically measure energy requirements. I also have a registered dietitian nutritionist on staff that specializes specifically in sports nutrition.
Whether your goal is to gain or lose weight, control medical problems, improve performance, or simply feel better, we can help! We can help give you the fundamental tools you need to gain control of your health and live a happier and more fulfilling life.
What matters most to you? Why?
I became a dietitian because I wanted to legitimately help people improve their life and their overall well-being. I love my job because I get to do exactly that!
I need to make a living like everyone else, but it is also important for me to do that in an honest and ethical way. What is most important to me is to provide a valuable service to the clients I work with, while running my business in an honest manner.
I always want to be proud of the work I am doing, not just because I am doing it well, but because I am doing it in alignment with my own code of ethics.
