Conversations with Sabastian McCann

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabastian McCann.

Hi Sabastian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have kind of always taken pictures of important events or if I hadn’t seen a friend for a long time, but I only recently got serious about it around 8-9 months ago after the persistent encouragement of my friends and family. I had only ever used a cellphone camera which is very limited compared to a DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) camera, but I didn’t know how to use one. So I went to a pawnshop and bought my very first Nikon D3400 DSLR camera with two lenses, hopped on YouTube and taught myself. I, however, have a mental disability that makes life difficult for me, I live with and take care of my physically disabled mother, if it wasn’t for my Mother and other’s believing in me I never would have gotten this far. The reason I take pictures is I believe a moment can last a lifetime with just a simple picture, imagine being 90 and you still have a picture of one of your favorite childhood memories and there you see your dog or cat you haven’t thought about in years and you’re flooded with emotions! I believe pictures should be cherished because they are more important than you think. I carry my camera literally everywhere I go because “Nature happens” and well I live in Hurricane Utah which is “The gateway to the parks.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being mentally disabled has had a huge impact on my ability to even function on a normal level as the majority of the population of the world, I have an incredibly intelligent mind but lack the capacity or capability to do what normal people do. Also being on disability means I am not very wealthy and can’t afford the newest camera or lens, the one I use was manufactured back in 2016 and camera’s have advanced much further since then.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love photography and I guess I always have, I do landscape, wildlife and macro photography. I am most proud of what I have been able to prove to myself and others, I would like to be known for making advanced miniature scenes. I guess being mentally disabled is what sets me apart from others.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was in and out of mental institutions, diagnosed with every disorder out there, I was shy, introverted, and quiet but that is because we didn’t realize my disability at that point. I was bullied relentlessly to the point I tuned out the entire world and gave up but it was because of my Mother, Father, friends, and family that I even came out of it.
