Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Coder.
Hi Claire, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory. After getting my period in public without the supplies I needed, I thought to myself, “Toilet paper is offered for free, why aren’t tampons and pads?” At that moment, I decided to drop out of college and start Aunt Flow at 18 years old. I’ve been on a mission to ensure that everyone has access to period products ever since!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Prior to building Aunt Flow, I owned a button company that allowed me to understand business fundamentals. That said, “There’s a Badge for That” was a high school business. I was on a mission to change the WORLD with Aunt Flow. Changing the world is not easy and requires a ton of risk. The first risk required for me was to leave The Ohio State University after just one semester. I went all in. This was just the start.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
On a mission to ensure everyone has access to period products, Aunt Flow is the most efficient solution to provide such essentials for free to employees, students and guests. Aunt Flow offers 100% organic cotton tampons and pads, and patented free-vend dispensing systems.
Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, we are a remote-based team across the U.S. Our patented period product dispensers are internationally acclaimed, receiving the ISSA Show 2021 Choice Award and The Sustainable Company of the Year 2021. Aunt Flow is recognized as a Best Woman-Owned Brand by NBC.
Thousands of businesses have joined the menstrual movement with Aunt Flow, including corporate partners, such as Google and Viacom, K-12 school districts, universities like Princeton University, and entertainment venues across the country.
We’re excited to share that, with the passing of H.B. 162, along with the efforts of The Policy Project (Utah Period Project) and with $1 million donations from both the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation and The Andrus Family Foundation, Aunt Flow free-vend dispensers will soon be installed at public and charter schools across the state of Utah for the start of the upcoming school year!
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
We focus on including EVERYONE in the conversation. Given that Aunt Flow sells period products to buildings, we are often selling to facility leaders…folks that don’t menstruate.
To welcome our facility leaders into the conversation, we coined the term “Flow Bros” – our fellas who support menstrual equity.
