Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria (Tori) Plant.
Hi Victoria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am Victoria Plant, but you can call me Tori. I was born an artist—from a young girl on, my passion for pastels became a love for the perfectly, colored shades of eye shadow and pigment. My specialties are makeup, lived in hair color, balayage, and hand-tied hair extensions.
I was born and raised in Murray, Utah and was introduced to hair by my aunt Susanne when I was a child. I always admired her dedication to the beauty industry as a stylist; even after a paralyzing, malignant brain tumor, she continued mentoring me and taught countless women with cancer how to style their hair and do their makeup.
My career in beauty industry began in 2009 as a makeup artist for several years. I decided to add hair to my repertoire, attending Paul Mitchell in 2014.
After working as a stylist, I wanted more than a just behind the chair position in the salon. I became salon manager at my former salon with hopes of owning my own salon one day. Once the pandemic hit in 2020, I decided the future is unknown and chasing dreams while we still had them was so important. I opened Planted Salon October 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. No regrets.
You can find me working behind the chair at my salon or behind the scenes at weddings, tv productions, and photo shoots. I work with well-known Photographers and Production companies in Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. I also often work as the stylist and makeup artist for reporters at the Sundance Film Festival. My work has been seen on celebrities, (John Legend, Leslie Mann, Kendra Wilkenson, Nick Jonas, Zuri Hall, Marc Malkin, etc ) featured in film, commercial, print, news, and seen on many clients walking around in the Salt Lake area.
When I’m not at Planted Salon, you’ll find me hanging out with friends/family, perhaps eating Italian or Greek cuisine, watching a horror movie, or dreaming up my next vacation.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not always been a smooth road. However, very rewarding one.
I opened my salon in October of 2020 in a global pandemic. Where there is ciaos, there is opportunity. Thus I opened “Planted Salon.”
There are always learning curves being a business owner. From just the business day to day duties. To managing people, customer satisfaction, and just juggling your own time management, personal life, and well-being.
I’m human. I have regrets. However, the salon is my home away from home. When it’s a full house you hear laughter, see transformations, and head stylists/guests enjoying one another. Those are the moments I pinch myself and I appreciate what’s been cultivated.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Planted Salon is a beauty Oasis, Garden level at the Maven District.
The Maven District is a curated block of locally-owned businesses that believe in diverse communities, self-growth, and dreaming big. Located off 145 E 900 S.
Planted Salon is all about a breath of fresh hair. We focus only on the hair. Our diverse, educated, specialty stylists all have unique knitch that they’ve perfected. From fashion hair color, curly hair, set styling, razor cutting, and hair extensions.
What sets Planted apart from other salons is simply, “The Vibe,” of course. The little details in the design make you feel welcomed and comfortable. The friendly banter between stylists and clients opens the room up to community conversation and laughter, and everyone feels included.
As a brand I’m most proud of the inclusivity Planted offers. I wanted a place that anyone and everyone would feel safe and welcome. No discrimination between pronouns, race, etc. We pride ourselves on giving our expert opinions, recommendations, and even referrals if we feel there is a better specialist in SLC for you.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The most exciting thing about the beauty industry is its ever-evolving. Trends come and go. Strong classic styles are always in style. Plus, there is always something coming out to make your job as a beauty professional easier. From the latest tools to products. There is always something cutting edge just right around the corner.
