Daily Inspiration: Meet Yunnie Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yunnie Kim.

Hi Yunnie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I have always been into photography ever since I was little. My first camera was this small Tweety Bird-themed camera and I would take it everywhere with me and take all the photos.

As I got older, my dad would teach me how to use his SLR cameras and I got into landscape photography and took classes in high school. Since then, I’ve continued to shoot landscapes everywhere I go but started venturing into portraiture over the last 6 years.

I love capturing people in their moments and creating a memory for them. I have also ventured into other types of photography; I have worked with the Utah Jazz and other companies for their events. Photography continues to be a passion of mine in all forms and manners.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Learning how to capture people on camera is different from the landscape, and it’s been tough learning on the job.

Since photography is not my full-time job, I have had to do a lot of free shoots for people in compensation for helping me learn and get better at my skill. It’s taken a lot of hours and shoots to figure out my editing style for portraiture and what works best for what type of photo it is.

Another thing that’s still a work in progress is learning how to be proud of my work. I’m very hard on myself and I feel like no matter what end result I edit and give to the client, there will always be something about it that I don’t like (despite the client validating and saying they love the photos they got).

Art may be subjective, but it’s easy to fall into the hole of comparison, and I always have to remind myself that my art is my own!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My full-time job is as a web developer. I work for Pluralsight, which is a company that provides tech skills courses. I also love to do theater and perform in shows! I’m always trying to put myself in a show as it’s a wonderful creative outlet for me.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I am a big extravert; I love meeting new people and getting to know them. It’s really easy for me to make conversation with others and find something to relate with them. As a photographer, that’s been a huge asset in my success, especially during shoots.

I’ve been told that I make them feel very comfortable while shooting, and it’s really easy for me to get them to laugh and capture their genuine happy face. I may be professional, but that doesn’t mean I can’t laugh with my clients!
