Conversations with Katie Greene

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Greene.

Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I attended nail school in 2019 after I decided that I no longer wanted to work dead-end jobs, I wanted to have my own business and a professional career. I’m a very creative person and I have always known that I needed to do something that I feel passionate about.

I graduated nail school at the beginning of the pandemic and I slowly built a small repertoire of different products such as polish, brushes, acrylic, hard gel, and even supplies to make press-on’s; I got myself a small table with a vent in it and while the world was social distancing I spent that time practicing on my own hands.

When I was younger I remember begging my parents to buy me a specific nail kit with various glittery plastic fake nails they sold at Toys ‘R’ Us, I think I made them buy me the exact same one at least three times. When I got a little older my babysitters gifted me their collections of polish, I also obtained a mini manicure set, and for the years I played piano I always kept my nails clean, short, and perfectly polished.

As the world began to open up again I slowly had friends, and some strangers, starting to request appointments with me! While in the past couple of years I have worked in a few amazing salons in the area I prefer to work in my own environment at my own pace where I can be one on one with my clients.

I am always keeping myself up to date with current trends by following other nail technicians and nail-wearing icons on social media. I’m still very new to the beauty industry and I know I have a lot to learn if I want to be successful.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It can be hard starting out because a lot of salons require booth rent and some rely on you to have your own clientele to bring to their salon, you also have to have your own products in those situations and it can be expensive to make sure you have all the new stuff for the nail art people request.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specifically love to work with hard gel. The consistency of the product can vary by company, but it is applied much like a traditional acrylic application, there’s no odor, they feel lighter, and for me personally they last much longer. I really have a good eye for making sure they are straight and have the proper structure of the apex. My main goal always is to protect the natural nail and give you beautiful clean cuticles.

Any big plans?
Eventually, I want to have my own boutique, a place where I can do nails, write, and make jewelry and coffee. I want to combine all of the things that I love and create a beautiful space for when people to visit.
