Community Highlights: Meet Schuyler Northstrom of Uinta Mattress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Schuyler Northstrom.

Hi Schuyler, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my career as a commodity manager and division control supervisor for an automotive manufacturer in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I have been a Senior Commodity Control & Global Supply Chain Manager for Bruker, Waterjet Holdings, and Varian Medical Systems, and a business analyst for Medtronic, allowing me to gain a vast understanding of business across the globe. I purchased a local mattress manufacturing company in 2016 while completing my MBA and have been working to grow the business!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been a little bumpy. As with most business purchases, there are things that come at you unexpectedly. I took over a company that has a very loyal, but faltering, core customer base. These customers provided regular feedback on areas where they would like to see change. This altered the course for us as a company and we shifted to focus on consistency in our products from the floor model on a customer’s floor to the beds being delivered to our customer’s customer.

We achieved this first bump and started to see an increase in customer satisfaction. The pandemic put all mattress companies in a situation where our raw materials became unavailable for a period of time, but Uinta was able to plan forward, allowing us to continue to deliver to our customers 99.8% of the time!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Uinta Mattress?
Uinta Mattress, formerly Diamond Mattress, was founded in 1984 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Continuing the company’s commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and value, Uinta Mattress combines the best of mattress innovation and design. Our focus as a locally-owned and operated manufacturer remains on handmade, cutting-edge sleep solutions.

We proudly design and manufacture seven original Uinta brand mattress lines for all needs and price considerations. Uinta’s additional licensed product lines included Eclipse, Eastman House, MillbrookBeds, Ernest Hemingway, Velika, and Natural Dreams Talalay and can be found at retailers across Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and New Mexico.

We are an independent mattress manufacturer specializing in the investment of your sleep experience. With our high standard of service, workmanship, and professionalism, we provide a superior alternative to the major brands, with an emphasis on supporting our community.

What do you think about luck?
I don’t know that luck plays into the equation. I find that open communication, a positive mindset, an open ear, and hard work play into creating your own “luck”. I wish I was better at the open ear and listening because in most cases your customers may already have an idea that appears to be “lucky”.

I have the privilege of working with an inspiring team of employees at Uinta. Along with our support staff and Plant Manager, our factory team is true craftspeople. They have weathered a pandemic with remarkable spirit and are excited to watch our company grow. It is their dedication and creativity that makes it possible to provide real value to our customers.
