Meet Nick Sokoloff of Nick Sokoloff Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Sokoloff.

Hi Nick, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I discovered my passion for photography during college at The University of Massachusetts – Amherst, while working for the school newspaper. Post graduation and a few jobs in the social work sector, I returned to graduate school to pursue a degree in photojournalism from the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

It’s been a winding road since then, including stints at various newspapers, as well as having been involved with Internet start-up work. While my photography work generally revolves around the world of corporate communications, I still return to and rely on my training and passion for editorial image.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was through small towns and backroads, highways, and traffic jams. Never smooth; generally interesting. Finding one’s path as a craftsperson or artist always has obstacles, both eternal, as well as internal It’s been a few decades now and things are falling into place and I’m starting to get pretty good at this photography thing.

It’s a challenge to juggle work ambitions and run your own business; be a devoted family man and manage financial obligations. Having not studied marketing or been taught the business end of photography, I had to learn some of this the hard way. Fortunately, I had good mentorship and colleagues.

As you know, we’re big fans of Nick Sokoloff Photography. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I have run my own photography business for over two decades. I began as a photojournalist, working for various newspapers and magazines. Once I started my freelance career, I took all jobs I could get… editorial, corporate, weddings, family portraits, etc.

Today I specialize in corporate communications… which includes annual reports, portraiture, campaign work, and product and medical photography. One of my great passions is food, and I am fortunate to have built a great food photography business, working with brilliant establishments and chefs.

I also produce personal work as time allows. I was recently involved with a pandemic story-telling portrait project The self-produced project I am most proud of is The New Americans of Salt Lake. This project involved telling the story of refugees resettled in the Salt Lake Valley. The portraits and stories, hang in the permanent collections at the City-County Building, as well as the Salt Lake Justice Courts. It’s always been important to me to produce work inspired by current events and the socio-political climate.

As previously mentioned, my background is in photojournalism. Though no longer a working journalist, I believe that every assignment and commission is about telling a story. It’s important to be curious and to listen; to pay attention to the details, while remaining nimble and flexible, and to have exceptional technical skills, Always value your work and charge a fair rate for this value.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Hmmm… I’m really not sure. I’ve lived a pretty large life and taken many adventures. I was once an avid hitch-hiker, having traversed most of the East coast in this manner. I once hitched the Long Island Expressway… if you’ve ever driven the L. I. E. you know this is no small achievement! I owned a Pilates studio for a number of years.
