Hidden Gems: Meet Ammon Elison of Overlander Auto Detailing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ammon Elison.

Hi Ammon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It started after I bought a car and couldn’t find anyone who could get the smoke smell out. I decided I would find out myself how to do it and really enjoyed the satisfaction of cleaning a car fully. After that point, I decided to prove to myself and a few friends that you could actually create something with nothing! From then on, detailing vehicles became a passion; I wanted people to have a service they would love without the negative repercussions of massive cost and light paint damage from car washes. More important than the service itself is the satisfaction of the customer when they see a brand new-looking vehicle. This is the focus of Overlander Auto Detailing now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like with every business, there is a challenge! At first, it was a lack of experience, but then it turned into equipment problems, staffing problems, etc. If there aren’t any challenges within a business, then that business isn’t truly growing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Overlander Auto Detailing?
Overlander Auto Detailing is a mobile detailing service that was originally created for the residents of Eagle Mountain City; we have, however, started branching out into other cities since we are mobile. As detailers, we aren’t just another car wash, in fact, we go above and beyond just cleaning that outside of the car. We specialize in deep cleaning the outside and inside of the vehicle, specifically focusing on the minute details such as vents, stains, cracks and crevices, under the seats, etc. Some people don’t realize that going through car washes that have automatic brushes on them actually leave micro scratching on your paint, if you don’t believe me, hold up your phone’s flashlight to the paint of the car and you’ll see little circular swirl marks everywhere. We focus on doing paint correction to the outside and applying wax or ceramic coating to the exterior for the longest-lasting protection.

It’s hard to separate services from each other based on services alone, so on top of being the best detail you’ll receive, we are also going to be the best experience you’ll get too! It’s said that personality is the first thing people see in a service. We strive for the best service you can get from a small business.

The best thing about Overlander Detailing is that after the first deep clean of your vehicle, we offer a subscription-based deal to keep your vehicle in the best condition it can be in. This can be however often you feel you would like it touched up.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Finding a mentor in the detailing world wasn’t really an option for me since I was looking for one to clean my car to begin with, so I looked into mentoring from successful business owners in general. I actually found my mentor based on connections I had in other groups, so I get to learn about other aspects of business that I didn’t think I would get to learn about!

As far as networking goes, I once heard that a customer will be your friend faster that a friend will be a customer. This was not true for me, loyal friends can help out immensely with the business if you offer something of value. Since I came from a military background as well, there is a lot of networking I can do in the armed forces world. For those who are not in a niche group like that, I recommend finding groups via social media about your business model. Online groups are very supportive of helping out people achieve their goals!
