Conversations with Genesis Hernandez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Hernandez.

Hi Genesis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Our story began in 2018 when we got married, purchased an RV and set out on a cross-country trip. A few friends suggested that we start a YouTube channel to document our travel experience, and although reluctant at first, thinking that no one would be interested in the content, we chose to do it for future selves and to allow our friends and family to live vicariously through us. On our trip, we began meeting people and learning about things we had never known about before. As obstacles of being out of our element presented themselves, such as not being able to find travel nursing work (in my case) we took the opportunity to learn about ourselves. It was in this difficult and uncertain place where we started to really find our true identities. We had to think outside of the box for the first time in our lives. We had to choose between giving up and going back home to comfort or sticking it out in discomfort and learning how to make it work. Unfortunately, right about the time of this revelation, we received a call that a cousin had passed away and so we headed home for the funeral. We intended to be there for 2 weeks and head back to our travels but we ended up taking temporary work back home and the next thing we knew we got “stuck” in the same cycle of life. We forgot about our newfound passion of content creation and put that dream to rest. We then decided to purchase a sprinter van and convert it into a tiny home to travel in. Four months after this, we found out we were expecting our first child. We decided not to allow this to deter us from our plans to travel again. We continued to work on the van and completed it 8 months after we had our daughter. We finally felt like we were picking up where we left off 2 years prior. Ten days into our road trip we learned that we were expecting another child. Again we continued on our path and eventually settled down in San Diego, California to have a home birth. Here in an unfamiliar state is where we began to do some real soul-searching. We reflected on all of the opportunities, we had allowed to slip by throughout our lives. We dove into our childhood’s and began to really think about the very first dreams placed in our hearts and who we were as children. I even consulted my mom for confirmation and asked her, “what did you see in me as a child? If you could have envisioned my life as an adult, what did my future look like through your eyes?” My mom replied with confirmation, saying, “I always thought you would have been an actress or comedian. If I could have envisioned your life as an adult it would be everything you’re beginning to do now.” I cried tears of joy and of sadness, because, on one end, I felt like through procrastination and fear (brought on by my self-doubt) I had sold myself short for so many years. But then my tears turned into tears of joy, as I realized that it wasn’t too late and this time I was going to go after everything God intended for our life. Organic content creation and creating ads for brands is currently what we do, but we believe it is just the tip of the iceberg. Even though we are still at the bottom, we can see the top.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. We have gone through many struggles but we were willing to stay in the fire, and allow it to refine us.

Our biggest struggles have been letting go of our hometown, family and friends. But we now learned that separation is needed in some seasons of life in order to really go after your purpose without distraction. Another struggle was my husband letting go of his career to focus on content creation.

With two small children and no help, it has been a struggle to work and get projects completed. Though having children has made it harder to achieve goals, they have also become our source of motivation.

If you’re willing to be uncomfortable for a little bit, there is so much more reward.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Content creation. We are microinfluencers on Instagram and TikTok. We share our lives as parents and post content that our followers can relate to. We share the joys and tough times of life, authentically.

We also create ads for brands in the baby, and lifestyle niche. We are most proud of the generational cycles we have broken and the healthy family we’ve created.

I think what sets us apart is our story, our journey living with a baby in a van and traveling the United States of America as a minority family.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I know it is cliché but I have to say, it is NEVER too late. You are the only person that is standing in the way of living out your dreams.
