Today we’d like to introduce you to Savy Knapp.
Hi Savy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up dreaming of becoming a neurosurgeon. I took all the hardest math and science classes through high school. I had never considered even taking an art class or anything visually creative – except for photography. I had been taking pictures my entire life. When I had taken all of the photo/video classes my school had to offer – I was encouraged to try the Graphic Design classes. I refused. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I was burnt out and tired that I decided to finally try a design class.
It was love at first sight. I loved my intro to graphic design class and took as many more as i could before I graduated. It was in my second semester of senior year, that I decided I wanted to pursue graphic design as a career.
I attended Utah State University with no formal fine art training. I promised myself to do whatever it took to get into the highly competitive graphic design BFA program they offered. I spent hours a week sketching, drawing, painting, etc until halfway into my sophomore year I applied for the design program. My hard work paid off and I was selected to be a part of the program.
I am proud to say that this past May, I graduated Cum Laude with a BFA in Graphic Design. While I was in school, I worked for the USU Student Media. I was the Design manager for 2.5 years. In that time, I was awarded 4th place for ‘Best Designer’ from the College Media Business and Advertising Managers national organization. I also helped lead student media to win Organization of the Year from the same organization.
Since graduating, I briefly worked as an intern at New U Life and I now currently work as a graphic designer at Epic Marketing
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have had the unique challenge of being extremely visually impaired. Without corrective lenses, I am legally blind. I can not see much out of my right eye at all. Even with lenses, my brain doesn’t use my right eye. I have what is called amblyopia [lazy eye].
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I work as a graphic designer at Epic Marketing. Most of the work I do is a digital design and communications. I am known for branding/logo work. I also am starting to dabble in web design.
I am proud of a recent project where my logo was selected and I now have the opportunity to be the creative lead for this particular brand.
What sets me apart is my work ethic and determination as well as my people skills.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Pinterest is my absolute go to. Not only for design inspiration but exposure to new content. I also use the world around me for inspiration. I take pictures of forms or things that intrigue me.
I don’t read a lot of design books, but I enjoy self-help books – such as ‘The Defining Decade’. These books help me take care of myself and my perceptions.
