Check Out Sofie Martinez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofie Martinez.

Hi Sofie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi! My name is Sofie and I am the owner of Oasis Studio Candle Company! I originally started making candles as a hobby around Christmas time in 2018. Going out and buying candles was always one of my favorite things to do with my aunt during the Holidays. First stop – coffee. Next stop – the candle shop, haha. So candles have always been nostalgic to me. I always knew that I wanted to open my own business but it wasn’t until the passing of my aunt, that I realized life is short. I had this hobby that I was really good at and passionate about. So I went for it. 2020 COVID happened and I knew that was my chance (due to time off) to start testing different jars, fragrances, essential oils, different waxes, etc. There were so many factors, haha. Fast forward it’s November of 2022 and I am launching next month! I am feeling all of the emotions. But I am so fortunate I was able to transform my pain into a form of passion. I really do love what I do and cannot wait for you all to buy a candle. (or wax melts)

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? Oh no. Haha. I honestly wake up dreading testing candles sometimes. Not because I don’t love it anymore but I was sick and tired of all the failures before that. I tell myself every day, without failure, there wouldn’t be a success. Candles are so simple to make, but they are not easy. I’m going to say that again. Candle-making is simple, not easy. There is the wax, the wick, the fragrance and the container. That’s all. Sometimes other candle makers will use dyes, dried flowers, etc. But just those 4 components. Sounds easy enough, right? I thought so too when I first started. It’s a chemical reaction, its science. It’s hard stuff, haha. I know candle makers in the community that are a master of the craft that still struggle to this day. It’s all about trial and error and balance. Finding that equal balance between all four components.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a candlemaker who specializes in coconut soy candles. My main goal is luxury meets sustainability. We want to ensure you are getting the highest quality product without having to sacrifice the aesthetic of it. All of our candles include essential oils and are uniquely hand-poured for you in my home studio. I have been making candles for about 4 years now, so I felt like it was time to show everyone my craft. My attention to detail sets me apart from the other candles. I small batch every fragrance to ensure the best results. I don’t pour in quantities larger than a dozen. That’s to make sure I have a smaller margin of error. As of right now, I have 8 fragrances. They are either categorized into 4 aromas: Floral, Masculine, Sweet, and Clean. I believe that because of my attention to detail and rigorous learning, my candles will only get better from here.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I grew up in a home where money was tight. I always had a meal at the end of the night but we only could afford the basic necessities. The biggest risk I have taken so far in my business is honestly spending all the money investing into it. I won’t give you an exact amount but over the past 3-4 years, I’ve spent thousands testing my candles out for my customers. I want them to know, I am listening to their concerns and will continue to move forward and make them better. Regarding myself as a risk taker in daily life? I would say yes, to an extent haha. I love seeking thrill and adventure. I plan to skydive soon, actually! I tend to think A LOT about whatever the risk is, but I end up taking it – most times.

Pricing:

  • $35 per 13 oz candle, 65-75 hours burning time
