Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Bosco.
Hi Julia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Staten Island, New York with the most wonderful family, full of entrepreneurial spirits and influences. My parents were always encouraging us to do what we really wanted with our career. I had a limitless mind full of beautiful dreams. From a very young age, I’ve always known I wanted to do something I was truly passionate about and knew I would use the gifts God gave me in a special way. I immersed myself in the fashion world at the young age of 11 when I became the Wildfox Kids blogger. It felt very natural for me to be in the world of fashion and in that industry, I attended fashion weeks consisting of trade shows, fashion shows and meeting celebrities on the red carpet. Learning and experiencing the business of fashion at a very young age has led me in the creation of my own kids’ brand, launched in 2021. Girl in the Dressing Room provides kids with the gift of fashion so that they can express the gifts within them. The “girl” in the dressing room escapes to her own world and experiences the reflection of the power her style holds.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been smooth in the way that I enjoy every second of it! However, I started from nothing, which has definitely been a struggle. After learning about others’ stories and how successful people started their businesses, I realized that no one ever feels like they’re ready. There’s a quote by Gretta Van Riel: “If you are not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you’ve launched too late.” That really stuck with me. I knew the life I wanted for myself and I wouldn’t settle for less, so I started and figured out ways to make it happen with a very small amount of money. I am proud that I made it happen and have learned so much along the way. I still have my struggles, but I am happier than ever because I get to build something I love and something that is mine.
We’ve been impressed with Girl in the Dressing Room, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Girl in the Dressing Room is a girl’s clothing brand, sold exclusively online. I do everything from e-commerce to social media. I design all the collections. My clothes are super fun and glamorous, while still being comfortable. I wanted to build a brand that would be a way for girls to wear clothing that makes them feel like stars. A brand that feels like a special fashion experience for little girls.
I recently came out with “Coloring Book” shirts that girls can color in with fabric markers. These are something that I’m really excited about. It’s the perfect activity for kids to use their imagination and see their design come to life, away from the screens! These new styles are available to shop on the site now and I can’t wait to see how customers respond, from what I’ve seen so far, little girls go crazy for it!
I am focusing on getting more eyes on my brand and constantly creating new ways to make it a special place for kids. Along with my focus on kids’ clothing, I see my brand growing into a place for all ages of women to enjoy and celebrate fashion together.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Foundr Magazine’s Youtube channel is an amazing source for learning people’s stories and tips. As well as free and paid courses in e-commerce, social media, and much more on their site.
The “How I Built This” podcast is probably my favorite podcast! Guy Raz interviews famous entrepreneurs on their stories and how they built their businesses, it’s pure gold!
I’d say health first, you can’t function at your best without it, so keep up with an active lifestyle. A major one for me is prayer and meditation. Praying keeps me grateful for how far I’ve come and peaceful with not knowing what’s next. Through meditating, I get super inspired and creative. It’s a fun way to visualize and believe in what you’re doing or creating.
