Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Snow.
Hi Joshua, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Back in 2015, a couple of years into picking up a camera and working hard as a fresh mechanical engineer I took a last-minute, unplanned trip to Utah. 4 Days in Moab, and 3 in Zion. 6 weeks later I was moving into a house, and starting a new job IN MOAB. From there it was peddle to the metal, 24/7 Landscape photography. Well.. when I wasn’t working, but soon I was able to walk away from the day job and become a full time photographer! After living and working ion Moab for 5 or so years, I decided to go mobile. Built out a van and hit the road. Now I occasionally put my feet down in Pheonix, during the winter, when its still flip-flop and flannel weather!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a rollercoaster honestly. But I don’t know if it’s solely the photography or everything that’s happened in life that I couldn’t have foreseen. I know that personally, I wish I wouldn’t save photography as a personal thing. As with anything we are passionate about, we get involved and the more we get involved, the more we see, the more we see that we don’t like. And that has spotted the love a little, and I let go for a while. Covid’s been weird, too… Recession, all of it, has been very weird.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Art is something I never thought would be my life, ever. As a kid, all I ever dreamed of was exploring remote jungles and far off places in search of new insects. Now years later I find myself as a full time fine-art landscape and astrophotographer. Which is even still evolving as that early childhood passion found it’s way back into my life, as well as other art mediums, so you could say that I am more of a freelance artist than specifically a photographer.
Primarily I make photographs, incredibly detailed, whimsical, nature-oriented images from all over the world, and teach it as a business. On the side hustle, I am a silversmith crafting silver and copper jewelry, a fossil preparator unearthing and preparing fossils, and a taxidermist specializing in small animals and insects for private collectors and museums!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
There is so much unbridled talent out there and so many folks instructing or selling instructional videos that its a matter of finding a person’s work you enjoy and the willingness to learn and strive to achieve it! As far as networking goes, I am a bit of a lone wolf, but I have found in the past that conferences, expo’s and camera clubs as amazing resources for networking. And obviously social media.
