Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Cressman.
Hi Lauren, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I have always been interested in art. Since I was in first grade, I wanted to teach art. I ended up making art a priority and studying it throughout school and college. In 2020 I graduated from BYU in art education and got hired at Wasatch high school to teach pottery in Heber, Utah and opened my ceramics business Cressman Ceramics. Although I was trained primarily in painting and drawing, I have since found a deep love for clay and sculpting. My business was founded on that love and the desire to share it with others. Each artwork I make whether it be a mug or a sculpture, is made with my love and passion for the craft. I now sell my drawings, painting, sculptures, and pottery. I love to make custom paintings or mugs for others. I have been in 5 shows at the JKR art gallery in Provo and often participate in farmers’ markets. I have recently opened up my own private studio in my basement to teach private lessons. Though I have a busy schedule, I always am creating.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am currently the only source of Income in our family. My husband is working hard in a 5 year PhD program. That being said I work a full-time teaching job and struggle to keep my pottery business up and running. It took me a few years to save money to get my own pottery wheel and often would work on the kitchen counter. My parents have been gracious enough to let me rent out space for a studio in their home as we still rent.
My business is still growing and I still strive to be in more art galleries and shows throughout the state.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Since I have studied all mediums of art, I love to do it all! I specialize in functional pottery but am constantly pushing myself to explore all forms of art. I am known for my small Greek sculptures and style influenced by my travels. One of my best sellers are my ramen bowls with chopstick holders. These are inspired by my father’s love for the Asian culture which i was raised on.
I am most proud of having handmade custom mugs in Mountain Wellness Bar in Heber. I hope to make more custom mugs for other small diners and restaurants.
All of my artwork comes from a biographical story. Whether it be from someone that inspires me or from family history each piece is dear to my heart.
Working 8-4 every day as a full-time pottery teacher gives me the opportunity to work with clay all day. When I come home, I still jump on the potter’s wheel or sculpt/ paint in my living room. Often my hands are so dry and cracking from working with clay all day but it’s what brings me the most joy. I would be creating 24/7 if I could.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t lose the passion. If you are starting to sell and your business is taking away the passion for what you do, then you need to take a step back. While money may be tight, your passion for your craft is most important.
Get involved in the community through farmers’ markets or other makers. Local communities are amazing for supporting and growing business ideas.
