Hi Tiffany, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I launched my company in July 2013, mainly as an experiment, to see if there was an interest in natural perfumery. I was taking care of my ill dad and grandma and needed to work from home. I was blown away by the immediate reception and was highlighted in that first year by Forbes Magazine, Women’s Health, Fashion Affair, He Said, and many others. I quit my insurance job and accepted a purchase order from FabFitFun for 60,000 units in our second year of business. Our scent Sultry went out in their subscription box and was a massive hit. The next year we partnered with Ipsy and sent out 15,000 bottles which went on to be highlighted by Organic Authority, BuzzFeed, The Bridal Guide, About.com, etc.
I do most of the product manufacturing and fulfillment with a small staff in a workshop attached to my home in Bluffdale. We have an organic garden just outside where we harvest many of the ingredients used in our scents. We still hand-fill each bottle and hire a warehouse facility and staff when needed for larger orders. We sell online at inklingscents.com and Etsy and our products can be found in 30 different shops around the world including, Canada, Italy, Macao, Grand Cayman, and throughout the US.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
During our second year in business, while fulfilling this large order for 60,000 units, my dad passed away and I slipped a disc in my back. It was incredibly difficult, physically and emotionally. Over the ensuing years, it has been challenging to work from home as I tend to work too much! I was recently a finalist on The Big Find with QVC and HSN. They wanted to bring our products onto their online platform, but the demand was anticipated to be at least 100 orders per day that would need to be shipped out within 24 hours. After much deliberation, I turned down the offer as I’m trying to find a work/life balance and that would have tipped me in a very stressful direction.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love to create new products and scents. I have a line of beautiful scents called Earth Notes. They feature suspended organic elements in the bottle, such as a lavender sprig, apple blossoms, rose petals, etc. They are strikingly beautiful and much sought after. I also have designer bottle options that are totally unique. One is a lace-wrapped, stainless steel flask which holds 2 oz. of our oil scents. Another is a vintage atomizer with a spray bulb. And the cream of the crop is an Inkwell and feather quill set on an acrylic vanity tray. All of our bottles are hand filled and orders sent with a handwritten note, so my customers know that their order was filled by a human who cares.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
I absolutely adore getting customer reviews! So many people respond in shock that they can wear the oil scents since they are hypoallergenic and don’t trigger their sensitivities. I’ve had women in tears who have had to give up wearing fragrance as it can be so triggering, but can now enjoy wearing our scents. I also provide a gift service, where someone can order a gift for a friend, include a personalized statement which I will then handwrite, and send directly to the recipient. People love to have the personal touch.
