Daily Inspiration: Meet Landon Potter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Landon Potter.

Hi Landon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My band, American Humor, started after seven years of various musical projects. Originally from Colorado, I spent my youth writing music and in turn started several bands. I dabbled with as many instruments as possible. I learned the ins and outs of what it takes to be a versatile musician by being stubborn enough to avoid giving up.

I do not profess to be a great maestro, but I am proud of where I’ve ended up. My band American Humor is composed of myself and two of my greatest friends, Alex & Wes. We are a dynamic trio and incomplete without the others.

We’ve progressed from being a basement rock band to performing often here in Salt Lake City as well as in other cities around the country. We bring rock and roll to life and do so with a passion, not as people looking to earn fame, but as people looking to create great music.

Today we are working on our second studio album and have a thriving fanbase worldwide. Although we are not mainstream by any means, we are working as hard as we can to introduce our music to those who might seek it out.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not! The music industry is laden with big egos and money-hungry leeches.

The largest struggle was finding the right people for the group. Which is why I asked my most talented and beloved friends to join in. After being in various bands with dozens of talented musicians, I realize a healthy friendship is a key to a healthy band.

We’ve had our fair share of mega-corporations “set up” shows out of the goodness of their hearts, only to take every penny at the end of the night. We’ve had our gear stolen with no recourse, and we’ve had elitist musicians do everything in their power to take down a small trio who just wants to have fun. Music shouldn’t be the most serious thing in the world, it’s art. And we believe in the power of music as a communication tool, not as a source for boosting ego.

Yet we persist.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
American Humor is an alternative rock band. Our music is often labeled as “punk rock” which we lean into. The reality is that we are influenced and nuanced by the sounds of blues, heavy metal, reggae, pop, and more.

We are known for our powerfully written music, comical stage antics, and for creating a fun yet energetic atmosphere for our fans.

We are most proud of the music we have released, which can be found on places like Spotify and Apple Music. We are proud of the bond we have developed as creatives and brothers. We have helped shape a small portion of SLC’s music scene and for that we are grateful.

We are set apart by the music we play, which is by no means mainstream yet palatable to most. As much as we would like to write love songs and focus on all that is good, we tend to write about real life and the difficulties one can expect to face. (Although we are not above a great love song, which you can find in our repertoire).

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Please follow us online and check out our music! We are eager to make new friends and fans and hope to share some great experiences with you in SLC and beyond! Look out for our second full-length album released later this year!
