Today we’d like to introduce you to Neil Wyatt.
Hi Neil, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is complicated. I’ve spent most of my life working in medicine. Medicine has always held a lot of interest in me. However, since I was old enough to talk, I’ve been singing. Music has been a huge part of my life. My grandfather was an extremely talented musician. He could play pretty much anything he picked up. He was always a huge inspiration musically for me. I went to school for a couple of years to study music. I was in the opera program at Weber State and I absolutely loved every minute of it. Unfortunately, life happened and I ended up pretty sick while I was in school and had to leave. Fast forward a year or so and my wife and I found out that we were expecting our third child. We quickly found out that there was something wrong. Our son had a heart condition that he wouldn’t survive. Our son lived for 11 hours but changed our lives forever.
Unfortunately, his loss had a huge impact on me and I never made it back to school to finish my education. My wife and I divorced a few years after we lost our son. My focus turned to our daughters and I worked and lived exclusively for them. In the back of my mind, however, my dream of performing and being on stage never left me. Over time I found myself in the right place at the right time. I was invited to be part of a small local production of a show called Lamb of God. I was just excited to be a part of it and didn’t think much past that. They had announced that they would be holding auditions for solos so, I jumped on it.
It just so happened that someone was there that happened to be on the board for the Draper Philharmonic. She wasn’t going to mind you but felt that she needed to go. Her choice to be there that night changed my life in so many ways. I have been in 3 different productions with Draper now and we are going to go to Europe in June. It was always my dream to perform on stage in Europe. It was a dream that I had given up on but now it’s going to happen!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. LOL, I lost my son. My wife and I divorced. I started two businesses that failed because my health tanked after getting vaccinated. It has been a rough road and I’m just trying to look to the future and hope to hold on to all that I can.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have worked in medicine for over half of my life.
The majority of it was in dermatology assisting the surgeon. I loved being a part of our patient’s healing even in a small way. After 22 years, I left medicine to start my own business. I worked with musicians, teaching them how to be successful on their own terms. We taught them how to record from home. Distribute their music. Utilize social media etc.
A short time into that I also became a wedding musician. I loved the idea of helping make that special day even more memorable with the music.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I love southwest and southwestern art. I love the heritage and culture of Native Americans. I also have a love for gargoyles and wish I could have them perched all over my home.
