Hidden Gems: Meet Adam Brown of Stacked! Quality Pancakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Brown.

Hi Adam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The idea for Stacked came to me while sitting around the table with my family, eating some “just add water” pancakes. I thought, what if there was a place that only served pancakes?! What if you could go to a restaurant and get freshly made-from-scratch pancakes with whatever toppings you wanted?

Shortly after sharing the idea with a few friends and family members who also thought the idea could have some merit, I started working on my own recipe for homemade pancakes and Stacked was born. In June of 2010 at the local Gardner’s market, Stacked sold its first pancake.

For six years, Stacked sold pancakes during the summers at the Cache Valley Gardeners Market. Each week we had the opportunity to visit with some great people and serve them pancakes. Consistently we are asked the questions, “Where are you located?” or “When are you going to get your own place?”

On February 18, 2017, Stacked opened the doors to our very first brick-and-mortar location. Now you can enjoy Stacked Pancakes six days a week, morning or night.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with any business, we have had our ups and downs. I don’t think anyone really understands what they are getting into the first time they start a business.

Running an eatery out of a 10-foot tent at the farmers market has proven to be quite different from a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Cooking and selling pancakes is surprisingly more challenging than most people think. Pancakes take up a lot of space on a griddle and making sure that we can serve a lot of people in a short amount of time – while providing high-quality food – has been a continual goal and challenge.

The last few years have been difficult to navigate as we dealt with everything Covid-19 has thrown at us and more recently we have had to deal with the increase in food costs.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Stacked? Quality Pancakes?
Stacked is a breakfast and brunch eatery known for our made-from-scratch pancakes, fresh toppings, and incredibly delicious buttermilk syrup.

Stacked is a Cache Valley original that boasts award-winning pancakes along with national recognition that includes features in publications like “The Best Pancakes in Every State” by Taste of Home, Daily News, and Reader’s Digest.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
I grew up working at restaurants. My first job was as a busser at Village Inn. The experience I gained working at a variety of restaurants has helped me know how to make a restaurant successful.

I enjoy engaging with people and seeing them enjoy quality food. I would recommend finding something that you are familiar with and enjoy. There are a lot of frustrating things that you have to deal with while starting and running a business. Finding the joy in that will help you get through the tough times.
