Rising Stars: Meet Jayne Michaels

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayne Michaels.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My sister and I have an interior design studio in NYC. We were born in Ogden Utah and moved to Salt Lake City when we were toddlers.

Our house was a mid-century design, with a flat roof and floor-to-ceiling windows. It formed our modern design approach.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Our parents divorced when Joan and I were 11. Our mother moved to Palm Springs California and our father mother to Palm Beach Florida. I missed the beauty of Utah, each season is so distinct and special. Palm Springs varied between warm and hot.

Our parents died when we were 21 and we moved to Italy and lived there for 2 years. A friend lived in New York and invited us to stay with her. We ended up living and going to school there and received degrees in Interior Design.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The name of our design studio is 2Michaels – Our father was an aerospace engineer at Hercules in Utah and our mother was an artist. We inherited our father’s love of details and our mother’s artistic sensibility.

Our firm creates fresh, elegant, comfortable, and timeless homes that reflect each client’s distinct personality and life history. We have expertise in 20th-century art and design and incorporate those elements into our projects.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Joan and I were misfits. First of all, we weren’t Mormons. That was a big deal at the time.

Our father was 53 when we were born and our mother was 36. Most of our friends had young parents and were Mormons.

We are identical twins as well. As much as we tried we never fit in.
