Life & Work with Canon Ryder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Canon Ryder.

Hi Canon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like everyone else my life took a dramatic turn in the year 2020. My plan for life was turned upside down.

Throughout the isolation of being home, I found myself with an opportunity to listen to the voices of my desires.

Raised by a single parent, I found my entertainment through computers and video games. I was a nerd. I can remember staying up every night watching my favorite Twitch streamers play the same games I loved. In high school, there were days I didn’t sleep because I was watching people online until my mom woke up the next morning. I fell in love with the idea of streaming and becoming a professional gamer. This was my first realization of what “Content creation” was. I started watching videos on Youtube religiously. I consumed every type of content from gaming, cars, cooking, product reviews, and even vlogs.

I couldn’t get enough and after every video, I had the same daydream. Becoming the person on the other side of my screen was what I wanted more than anything. Creating content that builds an online community. During Quarantine no app was more popular for content creators than Tiktok. I saw an opportunity to get my foot in the door and took it. I started learning how to film, how to edit, how to mimic popular trends and use audio that the algorithm was pushing. I was diligent and motivated in making myself a content creator. I was making videos while on breaks at work, idea boarding at every free moment that I could.

I was mesmerized by the possibilities of what I could make. Throughout my journey, I have made videos that cover almost every category. I’m currently working on expanding my reach to a platform that I in the past have been so scared to start. YouTube is the next part of my journey and I can’t wait to start a new chapter of content creation

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A smooth road would be the perfect antonym for what becoming a content creator is like. Content creators are subject to some of the most mentally challenging hurdles I never anticipated. Being online is like inviting everyone you know over to your house for Thanksgiving at the same time.

Stress, anxiety, depression, self-doubt, and body dysmorphia are constantly roaming in the mind. “Could I have done this better?” “What if people hate me for this?” “I should’ve done this differently.” “I worked so hard on this video but it did terrible.” or “Why is everyone so much more attractive than me?” Mentally doubting yourself at every turn, and feeling like you are not good enough.

Posting yourself online can be complete mental warfare and the critics are soldiers ready for battle. However, overcoming these challenges has made me the happiest I’ve ever been. It’s also not wrong to feel self-doubt or get criticism. Self-doubt helps you work on your self and criticism helps you to learn self-worth and grow a thick skin.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In my full-time job as a content creator, I have become known for many things. I think I am most proud of the fact that I have never become complacent in a single category of life! I have posted videos online of myself making coffee while ranting, working on my car, vlogging with my friends in Los Angeles, making audio transitions with props and outfits, cooking, starting my gym journey, skin care, gaming, and so much more.

I can’t say that I specialize in any particular topic, other than maybe flicking caps off of coffee jugs. But I can say what sets me apart from others is my willingness to try new forms of content. I have met so many people afraid to post any type of content other than what does well for them.

It took me a long time to learn that views don’t decide everything and there is a difference between content and who I am. Entertainment comes in all forms and the people who really love you online want to see all you have to offer.

Any big plans?
My plans for the future are to keep growing and become a name on the internet that everyone knows. I look forward to starting my newest journey on YouTube and filming the biggest change of my life. Moving to Utah to live with my boyfriend.

And also credit to my mom for always being there for me even when I was being a “butthead”. I love you, Mom!
