Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Kastleman.
Hi Jake, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started No More Desire because porn addiction recovery is something personal for me. I’ve been sober for over 8 years now.
My porn addiction started when I was a young teen, the same as many others I’ve worked with and spoken to in this area. I didn’t understand why I became addicted. The brain science of porn addiction was just coming out back then, and my dad was one of the pioneers in that field. But back then, we didn’t understand the real reasons people were becoming addicted to porn – things like shame, insecurity, disconnection, trauma, anxiety, and depression. I didn’t know that I dealt with so many of these mental and emotional struggles, because for me it was just normal life.
It took me years to uncover the answers for my own recovery, and now I’m helping others do the same. Part of this learning came through my degree in Psychology, and the rest learned while mentoring addicts under a therapist, sponsoring others in 12-step, and research over the past decade. I’ve learned so much about the true roots of addiction and the long-lasting solutions for recovery. More specifically, I’ve come to understand why so many Christian men in particular are becoming addicted to porn these days.
Over the years, I’ve seen that I can do a lot of good for people who suffer from porn addiction. I’ve created a curriculum that dives deep into the spiritual, mental, relational, and physical solutions for ridding ourselves of cravings for porn, so that we not only quit porn but begin to lose our desire for it. My brand, No More Desire, reflects this hope: that through changes in multiple areas of our lives we can uncover the roots of addiction and become someone who no longer needs it.
Currently, I am building a new and improved curriculum using principles from my current program as well as new solutions I have developed over the last year. I teach this curriculum in full within my personal coaching program, but you can find a preview of it by downloading my free ebook, The Recovery Core Guidebook.
My coaching program incorporates mental, spiritual, and physical methods for recovery. It is a well-rounded program that incorporates principles of 12-step, powerful daily check-ins, weekly one-on-one sessions, personalized plans and goals, and more. Find out more at nomoredesire.com.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Pretty positive that building a business is never a smooth road, am I right? There have been so, so many things to learn as an entrepreneur – from taxes and legal matters to marketing, software, website building…
One challenge is effectively reaching people. These days, you can produce a great product or service, but making sure others hear about it is an art all its own. You have to get connected and communicate with people in a way that catches their attention. So many of us are glued to social media, scrolling quickly through Google search results, constantly bombarded with advertisements…we have started tuning a lot of things out. So, grabbing people’s attention takes effort.
The other thing I’ve reflected a lot on is how easy it can be to lose sight of your purpose when building a business. It’s so easy to get caught up in the numbers, results, marketing efforts, etc. Ultimately though, owning a business isn’t about any of that. It’s about the people you’re serving. I remind myself everyday why I really got into all of this – why I’m putting in the effort in the first place. It’s for the people on the ground floor, the individuals I am connecting with on a daily basis. It’s not about how many people are listening to my podcast or watching my YouTube channel, it’s about the difference that material is making for even just one person. That’s something I try to stay aware of.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about No More Desire?
No More Desire is all about improving mindset, deepening spirituality, and forming healthy connections. My program is different than many others because I don’t focus so much on the behavior of addiction itself. That behavior is only a symptom. I believe that it is the mental, spiritual, relational, and even physical stressors and challenges in our lives that push us to addiction. If we solve those factors, we can naturally lose our desire for addiction. And that’s what I help my clients do.
If you struggle with porn addiction, head to my site nomoredesire.com and download my free eBook. I’ll teach you the 7 solutions to help you get rid of pornography addiction.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
None. I believe that failure is a sign that I need to improve or change something I’m doing. Success is a sign that I’m blessed and headed in the right direction.
