Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Contreras and Alexa Contreras.
Hi Brittany and Alexa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Ever since we were young, we have always loved to perform. While we were growing up, we kept having common interests; dance, K-pop, and films/watching films. We would see the media portray women in one light, which didn’t include us.
We are Central American cousins who were born in the United States, we also learned to appreciate our cultural heritage and native tongue, we are not only women of color but, as well plus size.
Therefore, we circled back to our childhood and remembered our passion for performance, so we brought it back to life and included others in our journey.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Alexa: Both, Brittany and I, share the same last name because our fathers are brothers. At a young age, Brittany’s parents split up, and some years that I moved to Utah. We stayed connected through calls and short periods when she would visit when we were children, distance was our first obstacle between us.
One of the obstacles we had to face in life was our self-esteem because we were picked on because of our weight and because our dreams were to become a public figure and people would joke that we were not pretty enough or skinny enough.
Our dreams kind of died during our pre-teen years because we are the eldest daughters of immigrant parents, we had to realistically leave our dreams for “real” career jobs; doctor, bank teller, or lawyer. Those were just a few obstacles in our life.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Britt: We are known for and are working for the YouTube world but, going into details, we branch out into social media as well.
Alexa: I am currently reaching for a degree in business (currently in Marketing) to first start learning the art of becoming a business owner and then seek other opportunities and degrees.
Britt: I’m majoring in English Literature to become a writer in the future with a minor in Film studies. We both use our skills to create content on social media and YouTube. We share pieces of our lifestyle and how we take on the world.
What sets us apart from others is the way we live our truth; we are both first-generation Central American women. We share memories and experiences like others do as well but, we are setting ourselves apart from our background and the person we are.
We hope to broaden the background we come from so we can see others want to represent where/what background they come from but, set ourselves apart with what we want to do, in theory- we want to create an enterprise, a company.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Alexa: Honesty, self-awareness, passion- these words together create someone who understands that at times losing oneself or where the passion is coming from but, to always be reminded of the beginning and where one was last honest to oneself.
Britt: Loyalty, creativity, patience- we must hold ourselves loyal to where we come from, from who we come from, and keep ourselves grounded to the most truthful version of ourselves. In many ways, as Alexa said, we must show creativity and try to see where else we can expand. As a writer, I have many writer’s blocks and have to remove myself from writing to find what I want to say or take it another way.
Patience, I know that the way we are starting (soon one year since we decided to take steps to do social media), I can’t magically think that everything has to be done now or want the success even the smallest to be accomplished. This journey has centered me on having patience even when I feel that I can’t at points in my life.
