In 2016, I embarked on an incredible journey that would see the birth of Chris McKinley Event Design in the heart of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Little did I know that with the unwavering support of a remarkable team, cherished friends, and my ever-supportive parents, we would establish Chris McKinley Events as a household name in the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, specializing in curating high-end luxury weddings and events. Allow me to take you through this remarkable journey, which has led us to serve some of the most renowned artists, including Grammy award winner Anthony Hamilton and Grammy Award nominee Tamar Braxton.

From the outset, our vision was clear: to carve out a niche in the market for high-end luxury events. We were driven by a shared commitment to infuse every celebration with unparalleled elegance, creativity, and an unerring attention to detail. Our goal was not merely to plan events but to craft extraordinary moments that would leave an indelible mark on our clients and their guests.

What truly distinguishes Chris McKinley’s Event Design is our passion for creating experiences that transcend the ordinary. Our meticulous planning and execution have garnered attention not only from Baton Rouge locals but also from artists and celebrities who seek nothing but the best. My parents have played a pivotal role in nurturing my passion and supporting my entrepreneurial spirit, making this journey a true family affair.

My friends, who believed in my vision from day one, and my team members, who shared my dedication, have been instrumental in our growth. Together, we have turned Baton Rouge into a vibrant center for luxury events and established Chris McKinley Event Design as a name synonymous with excellence in the metropolitan area.

We have continued to evolve and expand our horizons, in 2022, Chris McKinley Events expanded to Salt Lake City, Utah. We are incredibly excited to break into this wonderful event market and remain steadfast in our commitment to providing exceptional experiences that transcend expectations. Our journey from Baton Rouge to Salt Lake City to the center stage of luxury event planning has been nothing short of incredible, reminding us that with passion, dedication, and a supportive community, dreams can become reality, one event at a time.

In the world of event planning, our story serves as a testament to the power of vision and persistence. It is a constant reminder that with the right team and unwavering support, dreams can come true.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Our journey, while filled with remarkable successes, has not been without its share of challenges and unexpected turns. One of the most profound and impactful moments in this journey was the unexpected loss of my mother in 2019.

The passing of my mother was a devastating loss that left an indelible mark on my life and the path of Chris McKinley Events. She was not only my mother but also a source of unwavering support, inspiration, and encouragement. Her spirit and memory continue to drive both me and my team to uphold the highest standards of excellence in our work.

In the wake of this personal loss, navigating the world of event planning became even more significant, as it allowed us to honor my mother’s legacy through our commitment to delivering extraordinary experiences. Her spirit remains a guiding force, inspiring us to approach every event with the same passion and dedication that she instilled in me.

Another significant challenge in this journey was the transition from the familiar southern market to a completely different market in Utah. The Utah event industry posed a unique set of dynamics, preferences, and expectations that were distinct from what I had been accustomed to in the South. This shift required us to take intentional steps to adapt while remaining true to the Chris McKinley style.

To successfully navigate this transition, we immersing ourselves in the Utah event scene. We are proactively engaging with local vendors, professionals, and clients to gain insights into the preferences and trends of this new market. This learning process allows us to fuse the signature Chris McKinley style with the local aesthetics and preferences, creating events that will resonate with the Utah audience.

While the transition is challenging, it also provides an opportunity for growth and expansion. It underscores the importance of flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to learning in the ever-evolving world of event planning. The Utah market has shown us so much love.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I consider clear communication, understanding, and adaptability to be the most important qualities for our success. While adaptability is crucial in the ever-evolving world of event planning, clear communication and understanding form the foundation of our business.

Communication is the linchpin of our operations. It ensures that our team, clients, and vendors are all on the same page, leading to seamless event execution. It means not only conveying information effectively but also actively listening to our clients’ needs and preferences. We prioritize open and transparent communication throughout the planning process, from the initial consultation to the final event details.

Understanding is equally vital. Empathy and the ability to truly grasp our clients’ vision and goals allow us to create events that exceed their expectations. We take the time to understand our clients’ personalities, styles, and desires, which enables us to infuse their events with a personal touch and a sense of authenticity.
