Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Hennessey.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Five years ago, I moved from Pennsylvania to Utah to start a teaching career having never once been to Salt Lake City and not knowing a single soul that lived there. Luckily, I picked up the best of buds through rock climbing and teaching. Now, I’d never leave this place but I did decide to leave teaching for a while.
The only way that I felt brave enough to quit my career was to fall back on something I started in college: wedding photography. However, this time around, I have a new focus. I am looking to capture family, couples, and events as they truly happen. I want to capture the essence of who people are and show it to them.
I have a new documentary, and lifestyle aesthetic that continues to grow with each new photoshoot. I’m currently 50% off if booked by the end of this year because I don’t have that cliental basis I built up out East. And, honestly, it’s all about word of mouth when it comes to building relationships and showing up more than they expect.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. Ever heard of imposter syndrome? Honestly, it’s taken a lot of work, a lot of putting myself out there, trying things and screwing up, and fixing it for the future.
Being a good photographer takes study. It’s an art and a science. And putting people at ease? Sometimes you need to go above and beyond to make folks cozy. I’ve shot endless events and portraits and I’m always still learning.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
I am so excited to say that I feel like I understand how to make people feel comfortable and that helps me focus more on lighting, composition, and the overall vibe of the photograph.
I would love to collaborate with vendors of all kinds: bridal, outdoorsy, event coordinators, entertainment management, or anything creative! Support just comes in the form of talking praise when praise is due.
