Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gee.
Hi Taylor, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I started my career as an engineer at a Fortune 500 company, but always felt unfulfilled in the corporate world. My husband and I started talking about traveling and ways we could work on the road, which is when I started freelancing in data automation on Upwork.
I had always been a total Excel nerd and very good with data and numbers, but I had no idea how many businesses needed somebody like that until I started looking. Too often, business owners get pulled away from the work that they love for the repetitive, mundane tasks like reporting, quoting, or scheduling and I love helping them automate that.
I quickly realized that this was a viable option to work and travel and in December 2017 we bought our van and spent the next year and a half building and planning. In June 2019 we got married, sold our house, quit our corporate jobs, and hit the road full-time.
We traveled for about a year and a half all across North America before returning home in the fall of 2020. During our travels, I kept a limited client base and did most of my work offline, but after returning, I was able to officially launch SheetLogic in the spring of 2021.
These past few years have been full of growth and learning, but it’s been an incredible experience. I love meeting fellow small business owners and helping them get their time and freedom back through automating some of those mundane everyday tasks.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not! Can you imagine the anxiety I felt and the pushback I got when I told friends and family that I was quitting my engineering job to live in a van and work online? There were plenty of times while travelling and even when we got back I thought about giving up and going back.
While traveling, I did most of my work offline with no internet connection or cell service and would upload files when we got back into “civilization”. Running an online business while living off the grid adds a whole new twist to business management. It was stressful and full of uncertainty, but I learned so much about myself, the type of work I enjoy doing, and the type of clients I enjoy working with.
COVID threw a wrench on our plans (like everyone else!) and was the primary driver for ending our travels. While I knew I was ready to start a business, the hiring freeze made sure I had no other option but to make that leap. Looking back, I can say I truly believe the cliché saying that everything happens for a reason.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Many businesses are consumed with repetitive tasks like reporting or quote building. SheetLogic helps automate these tasks and give back their most valuable resource: time.
I am currently a one-woman shop and focus primarily on solutions that use everyday tools like Excel and Google Sheets that my clients can self-maintain. Some common projects that I work on include interactive dashboards, automated reports, quoting & estimating calculators, scheduling tools, google form integrations, and project management tools.
Too often I find that other data automation companies are good at what they do but lack the personal approach to connect with their clients. While I use an engineering mindset of optimizing and improving processes, I combine this with a more personal approach to ensure provide the best possible solutions for each unique business.
Some of the other platforms I work with include PowerBI, Looker Studio, Airtable, PowerAutomate, Make.com, and Zapier.
