Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Jordon.
Hi Dominic, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It is my pleasure to introduce myself as Dominic Jordon. I was born in the UK but ironically ended up in Utah as a result of living on Utah Drive during my time in the UK. Cameras have been a part of my life ever since I was a child. I have always had a camera in my hand while traveling, taking photos, and making random videos. My brother, who was also interested in video, nurtured this interest. Inspired by the And One mixtapes, we began filming videos of us doing basketball tricks. Additionally, our Uncle, a professional video editor, contributed to the skills that we developed.
With the help of my family and over the years, I developed my skills in creating photos and videos for a living. My photographs have been published in SLUG Magazine, a local publication. Through the momentum of my work, I started my own commercial production company, Slevin Studio. My work creating my second company gained attention for an opportunity to become a cinematographer and editor for a short film, Orenda.
Due to the crew’s hard work, it was nominated at several film festivals worldwide. This success led to the creation of film production company Marlon Dean Productions. We fundraised for our first feature film and exceeded our initial budget by 200%.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Just like everyone else, I suffer from Murphy’s law. Even when things are going right, I plan them out and have a backup plan for things that will still arise.
Whether it’s my gear breaking before a big shoot or a corrupted hard drive with a significant project, I can’t recover it. The issue isn’t these things happening because no matter what, things will always go wrong no matter what the thing. Recovering from these struggles is what I focus on. What has happened has happened. It is all about what you do next.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Yeah, the things I specialize in are photography and cinematography. With my cinematography, the project that I am the most proud of was Orenda, a no-budget short film that was shot in 3 days and was able to be premiered at film festivals worldwide.
That led to the formation of Marlon Dean Productions, a company that has just wrapped our first feature film, 3 Left Turns, and gearing up for our next project. Regarding photography, the current project I am working on is Teddy Travels Vol 1, my first photo book that marked a change in my career path to focus more on being a full-time creative. What sets me apart is how I see and perceive the world. How I view the world is reflected in how I capture my work. I try to capture a more authentic look of those moments in time.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Go out and create something. It doesn’t matter if you are good at it or not. The ability to create is something anyone can do and gives you a deeper appreciation for the craft and the world around you.
