Today we’d like to introduce you to Shade Leeds.
Hi Shade, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My roots very much started with having a creative family. I was introduced to comic books from a young age and was obsessed with cartoons. The first time I remember focusing on drawing was when I was 9 and in class trying to redraw my Lisa Frank folders – an inspiration I think you can still see today in my work.
I would make small comic books with my best friend and enjoyed using my drawings to funnel my thoughts, emotions, and inspirations. From then on, it felt natural and sacred to use my free time to draw and create. I have since gotten my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts and ramped up my work from doodles to paintings and digital art.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As an adult, prioritizing making art can be a challenge. Taking time to set up and work alone can feel selfish when the rest of the world requires tending to. I also have struggled with depression for many years and that can amplify that feelings.
Fortunately, I have an incredibly supportive community that roots for me and assures me that the work I do is impactful. Any time I get comments on my art, I take the time to meditate on what was said and who said it. It helps me feel connected to others.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My artwork mostly comprises digital art and acrylic paintings. I’m very inspired by sci-fi, anime, arcades, and animals so most of the subjects in my work surround those themes. I feel like I’m best known for my spin on anime styles as well as my black space backgrounds.
I’m trying to put viewers in a fantasy world that is whimsical yet cool. I’m proud of my ability to make my work look like it’s consistently from me. It portrays my authentic perspective and is an ode to all of the art that inspires me. For some reason, “I knew you made this!” is the best compliment.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Ogden so much that I left and came back! It’s a beautiful city full of interesting people. I love going on walks through random neighborhoods as well as local events and it makes me feel like I’m a part of a community full of fun-loving, creative people. There’s nowhere else like it!
What I like the least about Ogden is the lack of venues for teens. I used to be a certified mall rat and would go to concerts at Mojos. I’m not sure where they hang out now!
