Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Wien.
Hi Alexis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Well, Howdy! Originally, I am from Plano, Texas. I truly love Texas, and loved my college experience at the great Texas A&M University. It had been my dream to go there since I was little to become a veterinarian. I had studied animal science for a little over 2 years, and I started to question if it was the right path for me. I was trying to figure out what healthcare profession that I wanted to be in. My dad is a medical doctor and was trying to help me out.
But what kept showing up in my life was chiropractic. Chiropractic helped me greatly when I was in high school, and I thought it was so cool that you could non-invasive my help the body heal. Once I toured Parker University’s campus in Dallas, I had a gut feeling that I was called to be a chiropractor. I graduated with a degree in exercise physiology and went off the chiropractic school for another 3.5 years. During that time, I became part of an incredible organization called Nikau. It’s a program designed to teach female chiropractors how to adjust in a way that honors their own body and biomechanics.
We are primarily taught by men in school, and that doesn’t always translate well to women who don’t have giant pecs and triceps. I fell in love with learning, and with seeing women discover their power. Before I graduated, I spent my last term of school at Family First Chiropractic in Murray for an internship. I had never even been to Utah before, but I’ve always wanted to live somewhere with mountains. Through that internship, I met Dr. Steven Roushar at FLOW Chiropractic in Lehi, and I’ve been so blessed to be working there ever since, serving families and awesome people in the area!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Shockingly it has not been an entirely smooth journey! But that’s the beauty of life, right? My first major struggle was the crisis of realizing that I didn’t want to be a vet, the thing I thought I wanted to be all my life. It was scary not knowing what direction my life was going to go anymore. But I learned a lot about myself, and chiropractic is absolutely where I am supposed to be. When I was in chiropractic school, COVID hit the world.
Transferring a very hands-on profession (chiropractic means by hand) to online schooling was extremely frustrating, to say the least. I felt like I was getting cheated out of a thorough education. But through that experience, I was forced to look for learning opportunities elsewhere. So I started learning amazing skills from local chiropractors and chiropractic extracurricular programs, like Nikau. This ended up being one of the biggest blessings of my career and life. The other major challenge for me was moving to a brand new state where I didn’t know anyone.
It was very challenging to find community at first, and as an extrovert that was very hard on me. It’s an experience that forced me to learn more about myself and my needs and to get out of my comfort zone. I ended up meeting some amazing friends through local recreational sports teams, and through saying yes to new experiences. And as I grew my practice, my patient community has grown as well which has been so fun to see.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a chiropractor who specializes in pediatric and perinatal care, meaning I work a lot with children and pregnant/post-partum women. I do not exclusively see this population, but I have done extra training to deliver more specific to these populations. I personally really love working with women who have any type of pain or dysfunction surrounding pregnancy.
Many of my patients have said they feel better while pregnant than they did before pregnancy because they got under chiropractic care. I love seeing women improve their quality of life and health once we get them feeling and functioning better. The same goes for children, I help babies with difficulty eating, sleeping, or pooping. We assess where there is stress in their body and help relieve that stress through adjustments so the body has a better chance of healing itself appropriately.
I feel most proud when I see the care I provide give my patients a brighter and more enjoyable life. That’s why I love chiropractic so much, it helps people express themselves at their fullest potential. What sets me apart is that I do a very thorough evaluation on the first visit, and I truly listen. I want to understand exactly where my patients are so that I can give them a roadmap to success in their goals. I am focused on the nervous system, and my goal is to take stress off of it so that the body can start to communicate properly and heal.
I also have spent lots of time developing my craft (the adjustment), so that I can deliver comfortable and effective care. You don’t come to FLOW Chiropractic to get “popped”, you come to get an experience tailored to you that results in you healing more each time you get adjusted.
Any big plans?
As of right now, I’m mostly focused on continuing to grow my practice and to continue serving my community.
Eventually, I do believe I’d love to open a practice of my own, but right now I am enjoying to opportunity to learn and grow exactly where I am. In the next few years, I would love to get certified in animal chiropractic as well.
