Meet Joshua Lucero of Lucero Hair and Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Lucero.

Joshua Lucero

Hi Joshua, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
While navigating young adolescence, I stumbled upon my rock bottom. I had pretty much been defeated by what life was throwing at me and made a lot of bad decisions that got me into trouble. I was charged with several criminal counts of theft and served time in jail. That’s where learned how to cut though.

It saved my life in a lot of ways. I dealt with depression and loneliness for a long time. I struggled to keep working and tried to go to college, finally, I started hair school. This was my second chance at life and truly opened my eyes to the possibility of success. I began to venture into new ideas and creative outlets. I was nominated for the Student category for Premiere Orlando and was just windblown by the success and possibilities at my fingertips. I wanted to be a part of this world and community! I began to work in a barbershop and crafted a skill for short-length haircutting/barbering.

I knew I wanted to do more than that, so I began working in a studio on my own and cutting all my hair. Learning how to execute a haircut on all types of hair. I opened Lucero Hair and Wellness on 2/6/23 and began the process of sharing our story on how gender-free haircutting can change businesses and allow for more inclusiveness along with profit.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been hills to overcome, mountains to climb, and some barriers that I have had to learn to navigate. Through all of that, I have developed a strong sense of self and the business that I want to create. Being told I wouldn’t make it from people in this industry was an interesting point of view that I had to take as their insecurities. I believe there is more than 1 way to do most things, and our industry should be at the forefront of those ideas.

We should be shaping so much around us, but people don’t take us seriously due to our internal battles and egos. I see people in our industry putting others down all the time. Competitions do not create teamwork or inclusion, they tend to showcase those who are more popular or have a social media following than those who are doing life-changing work.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Lucero Hair and Wellness is a pivotal business that is structured to give affirming haircuts to all people. There’s this status quo around gendered haircutting, but it is so obsolete and archaic, that most salons/barbershops are not adapting to the changing world’s needs.

I believe they will get left behind. All services are booked around time, but we have put a gender on them for some reason. I have clients who identify as female getting fades, men who have long hair, and folks who are nonbinary who just want a haircut. Our methods have proved to be lucrative and allow people to feel like themselves when they come through and when they leave.

What were you like growing up?
I was shy but also extroverted. I didn’t have a lot of friends because I was a bit more feminine. I got beat up a lot and called names all the time. My childhood was really hard at home and school, which has created a tough exterior at times.
