Exploring Life & Business with Janie Dea of Splash Down

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Janie Dea.

Janie Dea

Hi Janie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in West Jordan/Kearns, Utah, with my dad and two older sisters. My mother was involved with us every day until she left when I was 5. After she left, my father and oldest sister, Heather, were the ones to run the show and make things as consistent as possible. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without watching my father and sisters be so strong and hardworking. Now, at 33, both my parents have passed away.

I’m still close with my siblings to this day. I live in Sandy with my own family now. I have an amazing partner named Jesse who always shows support and cheers me on every day. We have a big, mixed, beautiful family, and I couldn’t ask for anything better. I have three kids of my own, a 14-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter, and a 5-month-old little girl. They teach me every day what unconditional love is, and I enjoy every second I have with them. They are what make my world go round. When I was about 20, we had a family reunion out in Magna, and my uncle brought this game that didn’t have a name to it, but boy, was it FUN!!

The objective of it was to not let the water balloon pop on your side. We played with bed sheets, a net, and some water balloons, and I just remember it was nonstop laughter, smiles, and joy. After that, I remember thinking we needed more of this. More family time, more connection, and more joy all around. I looked for a game like it on the shelf at the stores, and of course, it wasn’t there. I told myself and others that one day, I was going to make that a game. When I worked for the State of Utah, I would always daydream and draw about this game, and I always told myself, “If you ever win the lotto, you need to make this game.”

Well, I didn’t win the Lotto, but I did get the chance to create this game, and that’s exactly what I did. I created Splashdown!! I was nervous the whole time, and I asked for guidance from my guardian angels and from God, and I was always brought to the same spot… “Do it!” So, I got to work, hired a team, and designed Splashdown! We are in year two now, and things are getting exciting! We are doing expo shows, I’m reaching out to retailers and just getting the word out altogether about this fun and exciting game. That’s why when I was asked to do this interview, I knew it was part of the momentum, and I had to say yes!

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is life ever a smooth road?! It’s had its challenges all the way around. Losing loved ones, losing friends. Having the ones closest to you say you can’t do it or you’re not going to make it happen. I think and know life is a struggle for all of us at times, and sometimes, every day is a struggle just to get up in the morning and move forward. But that’s what life is about moving through the hard and messy parts to get to the best parts of life!

This road has not been easy, but it has been worth it because with every messy era, there is a lesson I have learned, and I’m super thankful for that. Losing my parents before accomplishing Splashdown, giving birth and becoming a mother to all three kids has been the biggest challenge. Knowing my children won’t ever know who their grandma Pam is breaks my heart. And to see my son lose his grandpa and my little girls not knowing who their grandpa Kevin is hurts to the core.

But again, there is a lesson there, we just haven’t figured it out yet. I wish I had them both with me physically. I know they are here with me spiritually. If you still have your parents, hold them tight.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check?
I love podcasts and books. I haven’t been big on reading the last couple of years, but I do listen to them all the time. Some books that come to mind are The Four Agreements, The Illusion of Money, Atomic Habits, Paris, The Woman in Me, and I Glad My Mom Died. These books have helped me think in a completely different way.

Of course, self-help books are a must when you want to grow as a person and business, but documentaries are a must as well. Its good to see how others have reached their goals and see how they have got to where they are today. It just reminds you that things get messy and there is not one way to everything. A great podcast that I’m listening to now is Let’s be Honest with Kristin Cavallari. She is so fun and very down to earth. She always gives the good vibes!
