Today, we’d like to introduce you to Karissa Severe.
Hi Karissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After hair school, I worked at a few hair salons and couldn’t find the right salon culture that I wanted, so after a few years, I decided to make the leap and start my own salon. I wanted a salon that felt laid back and relaxed but still high-end and a space for stylists to create beautiful hair.
We found a space that already had the build out from a previous salon so my husband and I decided to make the leap and open Salon K in May 2009. 10 years later, in 2019, we did a huge remodel to really make the salon space our own vision and space.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh man there’s been so many road bumps and challenges. It turns out owning your own business is a 24/7 job and owning a salon means you wear a lot of different hats to keep everything running smoothly. Figuring out the right employees to hire was a huge one but honestly I have loved every employee we have hired whether good or bad because each one of them taught me something and helped me grow.
2020 was of course really hard and difficult on so many levels. I got really sick and was diagnosed with Crohns the end of 2020 and was pretty much on bed rest for a year and that eas super hard to. Navigate but I have an amazing manager who really stepped up to the plate and kept everything together.
My brother passed away at the end of last year, and that was really hard for me, but it also made me realize how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many amazing women and employees who really stepped up and took care of me. Major life events always show people’s true character, and I feel really lucky to know a lot of really amazing people.

We’re always looking for lessons that can be learned from any situation, including tragic ones like the COVID-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Honestly, the biggest lesson for me was to not panic over every little thing, and I’ve really been trying to be better about managing stress and letting the little things go.
