Daily Inspiration: Meet Bethany Hill

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Hill.

Bethany Hill

Hi Bethany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
The summer I turned 13, I was pestering my mom for things to do, so she sent me outside with the family camera. She told me to see how many things I could take pictures of in the yard, and I took the challenge very seriously! It was a simple point-and-shoot, and I fell in love with capturing beautiful moments in time to keep forever. I got my first book about photography and camera settings and started practicing.

After a year or so, I began doing sessions for families and high school seniors in my ward and began to dream of shooting a wedding someday. Three years ago this May, a family friend asked if I would be willing to shoot her wedding, and I screamed with excitement! That love for beautiful moments was amplified as I learned to capture moments throughout the most important day in someone’s life.

I’ve had the privilege of documenting many weddings since the first, and each couple I get to photograph deepens my passion for storytelling and art. This year, I’m blessed to start traveling around the country, telling these stories, and I can’t wait to keep learning and growing!

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey is a little unconventional among wedding photographers, but I’m also definitely not alone. Growing my skills, portfolio, and business has been a slow-moving process because I’ve been a full-time college student, wife, and part-time intern throughout the process. Many times, my business has been put on the backburner because of the sheer volume of things to do, and getting back into it is frustrating and slow.

I often struggle with comparing my progression and even the rate of my growth to other photographers. There have been a few days where I feel so overwhelmed with all the tasks of business I need to do – managing social media, building guides, branding, networking, communicating, editing, etc. that I wonder whether I’m “cut out” for it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I am a wedding and portrait photographer specializing in detailed storytelling and timeless coloring.

I am known to focus intensely on minute details and small moments that would otherwise go unnoticed, and I do everything I can to create true connections with my clients so they can be their authentic selves in front of the camera. I value authenticity in myself and my work and often make true friends with clients as we work together to document their stories!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I believe that success is finding your “thing” and doing it with joy. Integrating your core values with your passion will always be incredibly rewarding, although often difficult. Success comes when you have the privilege to emulate your values and share your passion every day.
