Inspiring Conversations with Megan McDonald of One Healthy Gut

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Megan McDonald.

Megan McDonald

Hi Megan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I opened my Holistic Nutrition and Gut Health Coaching business four years ago with a strong desire to help women simplify health and wellness, stop battling with digestive issues, and start feeling confident and comfortable around food and in their skin!

As someone who struggled with chronic health conditions from a young age (asthma, lung infections/frequent sickness, hormone issues, depression, anxiety, and crippling digestive issues, to name a few), I was always told that there was nothing I could do to get better, that my symptoms were a result of my genetics and no one I went to see could help me. Several years ago I decided to take responsibility for my health, change my diet and lifestyle over time, and my health dramatically improved. Things I had struggled with for decades were no longer an issue, I went off my medications, I felt clearer and happier than I had in my whole life.

I wanted to help other women take ownership of their health so they could feel their best, but in a way that wasn’t complicated, perpetuating unhealthy relationships with food or unsustainable because it had to be a lifestyle change and not just a trendy diet. When I first opened my doors, I spoke with so many women who were struggling with how overwhelmed they felt with their health and how dismissed they’d been by so many health care providers about the symptoms they were struggling with.

After a few years of coaching and using Epigenetic Hair Analysis with my clients, I started to see patterns in people’s health. No matter what problems they came to me with, there were foundational things they needed to do to get their health on track. I realized how large of a role gut health played in hormone health, mental health, metabolic health, everything really – I knew that this was what I needed to help people focus on. Supporting my own gut health was how I was able to turn my health around as well.

I’ve helped hundreds of women simplify their health, feel confident around food, and comfortable in their clothes!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. I think the most challenging part for me is that you have to put yourself out there over and over and over again, even when it seems like no one is listening to you. Mentally it’s been really hard for me because at the end of the day I just want to help people.

My skin has gotten so much thicker growing my business and it’s been hard on my self esteem at times but has made me stronger in the long run. It’s easy to get caught comparing yourself to others too. But you really have to stay in your own lane and so consistent with your message and it takes time but slowly you start to see people engaging with you, messaging you, working with you! It’s crazy to look back from where I am to where I was four years ago. It’s night and day!

My husband and I are both entrepreneurs and it means we both are always thinking about how we can show up for our businesses and serve our clients better while also trying to juggle being a parent to our toddler as well as our family and friend relationships which are so important to us. I’m glad my husband gets me in that way because I couldn’t do this without him! He is my biggest cheerleader and support. He believes in me even when I don’t!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
I specialize in helping women who want lasting relief from digestive symptoms and want to feel comfortable in their clothes and confident around food. I believe what sets me apart is finding balance in a healthy lifestyle, educating my clients on the correct order of healing the gut and body, using a holistic approach with lifestyle, diet, and supplementation, as well as helping them uncover the root causes of their health issues so they can fast track the way to healing.

I currently offer Epigenetic Hair Scan Reports, which are one of the ways I can help people identify their root causes. Through 4 follicles of hair, an epigenetic report is generated that can tell us what nutrients your body needs more of (healthy fats, amino acids, antioxidants, minerals, vitamins) and what is currently stressing the body (parasites, metals, digestion, chemical, microbiome imbalances, stress).

It gives you so much information about your health and we do a consult together to make sure you understand what you need to do to reach your health goals. I also have an amazing 14 week program that walks you through exactly how to reset your gut and is customized to the results we get in your hair scan and your symptoms.

I am currently taking clients anywhere in the US (except NY) and all appointments (including the hair scan) can be done virtually. I ship out a collection kit to you and you can collect your sample in the comfort of your own home!

I would say the biggest thing I want people to know is that your body is amazing and wants you to be healthy! The annoying symptoms are not your body trying to bug you, they are very intentional things that your body is doing to try and keep you safe and help you. We just need to figure out what kind of information those symptoms are! Symptoms are always information from the body.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising that most people who know me or know my brand might not know about me is… I love to dance! I danced all growing up but a few years ago decided I wanted to work up to Pointe in Ballet.

It took me a few years but last year I got my pointe shoes and have done two performances since then. It’s such a beautiful and challenging style of dance. I feel so graceful and strong when I do it!
