Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Chipman.
Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve had a passion for design ever since I was a little girl. I remember constantly rearranging my childhood bedroom, and I enjoyed playing with my Barbie dream house more than the actual dolls. In middle school, I wallpapered the inside of my friends’ lockers with my beloved collection of wallcovering scraps. I still stand by the fact that it was an excellent business model, despite how the school administration made me scrape all the wallpaper off at the end of the school year. In college, I briefly pursued a Degree in Chemical Engineering before deciding that I needed to follow my dream of interior design. I graduated with a BS in Environment and Behavior from the University of Utah and worked as a freelance designer while raising my family. 2011, I began working for a start-up design company in Park City. As one of the original designers on the team, I had the opportunity to grow with the company in ways I never imagined possible, stretching myself and taking on more work than I ever had before. These years have shaped me not only as a person but also as a creative, and I am continually grateful for the knowledge and experience I gained during this time. But after working happily at this firm for nearly a decade, I felt strongly that it was again time for me to stretch my wings. That was when one of my current clients (now a business partner!) expressed interest in joining forces and opening our interior design firm. It was almost like the universe was urging me to leap outside of my comfort zone. So, I quit my job, and Bond Design Company was born just a few months later.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The past few years of growing Bond have been some of my life’s most challenging but fulfilling years. I work more now than ever before, but since opening Bond, my work has taken on a deeper meaning because it is entirely my own. The people I’ve met, the connections I’ve made, the team I’ve grown with, and the privilege of working with every day have made the hard work incredibly worth it and have inspired so much hope in me for the future of Bond.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I hope people see that Bond is not a one-look brand but a design firm that seeks to create one-of-a-kind spaces. The one thing that inspires my design the most is the individuality of each client and their home. The most critical aspect of what I do is the creative exploration of uncovering who my client is and creating a home that can be a canvas for their life, a reflection of their energy, and the storybook of their joys. I want to think that comes across in my work because no two homes feel the same. There are a lot of wildly successful and talented interior designers out there who have a specialty style or aesthetic about their work, but that isn’t how Bond operates. We crave the variety and creative expression of exploring new design styles for each of our projects. Since starting Bond, we’ve designed everything from a modern mountain cabin to a speak-easy-inspired guest house to a timeless French cottage, and we now have even more variety in the pipeline.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those just starting.
