Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawson Rice
Hi Dawson, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Texas. Went to BYUH for a year, went back home for a year to serve a performing mission in Nauvoo and sing for the youth album. Got asked to audition for American idol while on my mission. Auditioned one month after I got home, made it to top 24 and moved to Utah for school. Perused my sad music and realized I didn’t like the person I was becoming seeking fame so I stepped back and decided to glorify god with my gifts instead and am now working on Christian music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. I left to Hawaii because I didn’t see anyone I knew because I didn’t have any good friends in high school. I was kicked out of BYUH for refusing the vaccine. Every facet of life went to hack in Hawaii until I couldn’t stand it anymore and moved home to give up. That’s when I was asked to serve a performing mission and sing for the youth album for the church though. I was basically going through an identity crisis the whole time I was on idol and was hardly aired so I was the first voted out. Post-idol was difficult because I was just back at school and all my other friends were getting these big opportunities and no one knew who I was. Life has been really hard the last 5 months before my decision to change music because I became a more self centered person than I wanted to be and my relationships suffered.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer/artist. I’ve put out many sadboi/pop songs that are great but I realized they don’t put any good in the world and that’s what I always intended, so I’m switching to positive/Christian music and I could not be more excited about the music we’ve made so far.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I play pickleball every single day and I watch survivor religiously.
