Hidden Gems: Meet Seidler Ziser of Gracie Barra Utah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Seidler Ziser

Hi Seidler, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Seidler Rodrigo Ziser, and I was born in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I am married to Daniela, and we have a son named Pedro who also trains BJJ. This December, we celebrate 20 years together.

Professionally, I began my career as a pharmacist, holding a master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences. I worked for many years at FIOCRUZ (Oswaldo Cruz Foundation) in Rio de Janeiro, one of Latin America’s leading Research and Development institutions in Bioscience.

Growing up in the Rio Metro Area, martial arts, especially BJJ, were a significant part of the local culture. My mother trained in martial arts, and we often wrestled in our backyard. She encouraged me to train, so I dabbled in capoeira, karate, boxing, and a bit of BJJ. However, at the time, my main passion was playing the guitar.

In 2009, needing to improve my health and fitness, I joined a Jiu-Jitsu school. Little did I know this decision would change my life. I started competing as a white belt and became more serious about the sport after joining Gracie Barra as a blue belt in 2012. I achieved the #1 ranking in the Rio de Janeiro state for all my colored belts and won the state championship multiple times, along with several IBJJF tournaments.

Naturally, I began assisting my instructors and eventually started teaching at my former workplace, Fiocruz, by the time I was a purple belt. In 2016, I opened my first Gracie Barra school in Rio, Gracie Barra Vargem Grande. The following year, I opened my second school, Gracie Barra Santa Rosa, and was promoted to black belt by Jefferson Moura at the original Gracie Barra school, Gracie Barra Matriz, RJ, Brazil.

In 2018, I opened my third school, Gracie Barra Icaraí, and began planning my move to Utah, which happened in 2020. This career shift has brought me immense happiness. Influencing people to become the best versions of themselves is priceless. The physical workout is outstanding, and BJJ’s mental and social benefits are profound. The art itself is addictive, offering endless learning opportunities. The confidence gained from mastering the best self-defense system in the world and the positive impact on mental health through strong relationships with training partners are invaluable.

I must also mention my business partner, Andrea Warner, whose passion, competence, and commitment to our schools’ success have been truly inspiring. Our team has excelled in personal development, tournaments, and business growth. The impact on our students is remarkable, with many experiencing significant physical and mental health improvements. The transformation in children is particularly noteworthy.

Our team has won several medals in IBJJF and local tournaments, earning team trophies in recent years. Gracie Barra is the largest BJJ organization globally, with over 1,000 schools on every continent. In Utah, we now have seven locations, making us the largest in the state. We own three of these schools, making us the owners with the most locations and students in Utah. We plan to continue expanding to provide the best experience for our students. What sets us apart, in addition to our technical skills and quality of instruction, is our family-friendly environment that welcomes everyone, regardless of skill level, age, gender, or physical condition.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say I had some challenges. not really smooth.
I had to improve my English skills dramatically
I had the pandemic right after my arrival.
I had 2 surgeries, one on my spine
I had to help my son who spoke no english
I had to learn a lot about the local culture and the differences from what I used to experience in Brazil
I had to learn a lot about human resources because we had issues with past employees.
